Conclusions: Compared with larynx cancers salvage rates are poorer for hypopharyngeal cancers and the role of primary surgery seems to be significantly higher and more decisive in overall survival (OS). Hypopharyngeal cancers therefore warrant a closer follow-up after an organ preservation protocol, to detect recurrence at the earliest stage and plan for an effective salvage surgery. Objective: To evaluate the survival and morbidity of patients treated by surgery for carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx according to site. Patients and methods: All patients who had undergone laryngectomy at the Division of Surgical Oncol...

We report an 11-year-old female with severe and prolonged neutropenia after irinotecan-based chemotherapy. The patient’s genotyping revealed polymorphisms in both UGT1A1 and SLCO1B1. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of combined genotyping of both UGT1A1 and SLCO1B1 in a child with severe irinotecan toxicity. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

(NaturalNews) There's a lot of talk about mammograms and cancer screenings this week. A U.S. government task force altered its recommendations, saying that women under 50 should receive no mammograms at all because the risk of harm far outweighs any promise of saving lives. This, in turn, led to a very vocal backlash from cancer industry promoters and even a few deeply misinformed celebrities like Sheryl Crow who swear by mammograms. (Sheryl Crow has a poor understanding of the effects of ionizing radiation.)Rather than providing new answers, this week's debates on mammograms have actually raised all sorts of new questions...

Conclusion:
The rapid diagnosis of spinal TB demands a high index of suspicion and expertise regarding the appropriate diagnostic procedures. Due to the devastating consequences of a missed diagnosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis should be considered early in every case of spondylitis, intraspinal or paravertebral abscess. The presence of certain alarm signals like a prolonged history of progressive back pain, constitutional symptoms or pulmonary nodules on a chest radiograph, particularly in the upper lobes, may guide the clinical suspicion. Conclusions: TMZ is not a radiosensitizing agent but yields additive cytotoxicity in combination with radiation. Our data indicate that TMZ treatment should commence at least 3 days before radiation to achieve maximum benefit. Activation of G2/M checkpoint signaling by TMZ and radiation has a cytoprotective effect that can be overcome by dual inhibition of ATM and ATR. More specific inhibition of checkpoint signaling will be required to increase treatment efficacy without exacerbating toxicity.
