Sugar Consumption Linked To Diabetes, Independent Of Other Factors
Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes? For years, scientists have said "not exactly." Eating too much of any food, including sugar, can cause you to gain weight; it's the resulting obesity that predisposes people to diabetes, according to the prevailing theory. But now the results of a large epidemiological study suggest sugar may also have a direct, independent link to diabetes...

Individuals At High Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Should Address The Balance Between Sedentary Behaviour And Physical Activity
New research led at the University of Leicester reveals that individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes would benefit from being told to sit less and move around more often - rather than simply exercising regularly. The experts suggest that reducing sitting time by 90 minutes in total per day could lead to important health benefits. Currently, at risk patients are advised to engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for at least 150 mins per week...

Worrying Upward Trend In Obesity Rates In Canadian Adult Population
Obesity rates across Canada are reaching alarming levels and continue to climb, according to a new University of British Columbia study. Published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health, the study provides the first comprehensive look at adult obesity rates across Canada since 1998, complete with "obesity maps." "Being obese or overweight significantly increases the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers," says study lead author, Prof. Carolyn Gotay in UBC's School of Population and Public Health...

Diabetes Not Found To Impact Infection Risk, Surgical Outcomes
Patients with diabetes were no more likely to suffer infection, deep vein thrombosis (a deep vein blood clot) or other complications following total knee replacement (TKR) than patients without diabetes, according to new research published online, in advance of its publication in the March 2013 Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). The study authors sought to determine whether or not blood sugar level (glycemic control) influenced outcome in TKR. Fifty-two percent of people with diabetes have arthritis...

Pesticides Linked To Type 2 Diabetes
In a groundbreaking study, environmental-health scientists have discovered a link between type 2 diabetes and pesticides - a result that could explain the significant increase in the health condition in the last few years. The study was conducted by a group of researchers from the University of Granada in Spain and is published in the journal Environmental Research. The investigators found people with higher concentrations of DDE (from the pesticide DDT), are four times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes...

New Horizons in Cellular Regulation by Inositol Polyphosphates: Insights from the Pancreatic β-Cell.
Abstract Studies of inositol polyphosphates in the pancreatic β-cell have led to an exciting synergism between new discoveries regarding their cellular roles and new insights into β-cell function. Because the loss or malfunction of the β-cell is central to diabetes, these studies open the possibility of new pharmacological interventions in a disease that has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Using the β-cell as our prime but not exclusive example, we examine the inositol polyphosphates in three main groups: 1) inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and its influence on Ca(2+) signaling, specifically in a cell in wh...

Challenging the FDA black box warning for high aspirin dose with ticagrelor in patients with diabetes.
Abstract Ticagrelor, a novel reversible antiplatelet agent, has a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) black box warning to avoid maintenance doses of aspirin (ASA) >100 mg/daily. This restriction is based on the hypothesis that ASA doses >100 mg somehow decreased ticagrelor's benefit in the Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes (PLATO) U.S. cohort. However, these data are highly postrandomized, come from a very small subgroup in PLATO (57% of patients in the U.S. site), and make no biological sense. Moreover, the ticagrelor-ASA interaction was not significant by any multivariate Cox regression analyses. The...
