CONCLUSION: Ambulatory monitoring is not regarded as an appropriate procedure for the screening of myocardial ischemia, due to the characteristics and technical limitations of the method, especially in populations with a low prevalence of coronary disease. In this cross-sectional and observational study, we concluded that the Holter recordings provided additional information which could not be obtained by conventional electrocardiogram. Here's another piece of news about medical gadgetry released at the ongoing Medica 2009. The Infinity M540 from Drägerwerk AG & Co. (aka Dräger) is designed to provide portability and full functionality of a stationary vitals signs monitor:
The Dräger Infinity M540 measures and saves patient vital signs data, including 12-lead ECG and etCO2 values. For transport, the hospital staff can release the M540 from its docking station using one hand. The monitor continues to display and record vital data without interruption. As soon as the M540 is reconnected to a docking station – whether at its previou...

(NaturalNews) Green tea lovers like to grab a steaming hot cup of the stuff because it tastes so good in their mouth; now, they can grab it because it's so good for their mouth. According to a study recently published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, people with precancerous oral lesions were able to slow the progression of those lesions by taking a potent green tea extract. What's more, the extracts caused some of the participants' lesions to disappear entirely. To test the green tea extracts' effectiveness, University of Texas researchers had 41 leukoplakia participants take one of three things (actually, one of...

Since it was first reported 50 years ago, the long QT syndrome (LQTS) is now recognized as a genetic disease caused by mutations of ion channel genes encoding a cardiac channel essential for the control of ventricular repolarization (). The LQTS is not only the most common and extensively researched genetic cardiac arrhythmia (), it has also attracted premier scientists and scholars in single-cell electrophysiology and molecular genetics. In turn, they have produced seminal discoveries that shaped our understanding of the syndrome. The mutated genes in LQTS patients cause delayed repolarization and, in turn, prolong the QT...

Conclusions: In heart transplant recipients, AF is uncommon and occurs in the setting of myocardial dysfunction and graft rejection. In contrast, AF is more common after lung transplantation despite the absence of graft rejection and cardiac dysfunction. Pulmonary vein isolation alone cannot explain the discrepancy in AF incidence between heart transplant recipients and double-lung transplant recipients. Cardiac autonomic denervation may have a protective effect for heart transplant patients in the post-operative setting. (Source: Journal of the American College of Cardiology)

A 56-year-old man presented with 48h of crescendo angina pectoris and labile ECG changes with transient lateral ST elevation and deep anterior/inferior ST depression. On-table echocardiography revealed a dilated aortic root suggesting an acute aortic dissection. An urgent 64-slice multi-detector row CT (MDCT) gated scan of the thoracic aorta and coronary arteries showed a single coronary ostium arising higher and more anterior above the sinotubular ridge. Originating from the ostium were two vessels: a small ...

Does This Patient With Palpitations Have a Cardiac Arrhythmia? [The Rational Clinical Examination]

Conclusions While the presence of a regular rapid-pounding sensation in the neck or visible neck pulsations associated with palpitations makes the diagnosis of atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia likely, the reviewed studies suggest that the clinical examination is not sufficiently accurate to exclude clinically significant arrhythmias in most patients. Thus, prolonged electrocardiographic monitoring with demonstration of symptom-rhythm correlation is required to make the diagnosis of a cardiac arrhythmia for most patients with recurrent palpitations. Studies have shown that continuous rhythm monitoring enables the detection of significantly more atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes than routine follow-up of patients, i.e. based on perception of symptoms or on 24–48 h Holter monitoring. The positive outcome of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may be easily overestimated, especially in patients with paroxysmal AF. Thirty-three consecutive patients, aged 59.4±8.9 years (range 38–75 years) participated in this study. All patients had documented AF episodes with an AF duration of 9.4±7.1 years (range 1.5–25 years). A new monitor...

Postexercise ST/HR hysteresis was calculated as normalized for heart rate (HR) ST/HR loop area during the first 3 min of recovery. ST/HR index was obtained by dividing the overall ...

Abstract Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) are common pediatric rhythm disorders requiring comprehensive laboratory evaluation. Although

additional diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up. A number of reports have presented experimental and clinical evidence that
increased sympathetic activity can initiate, or at least facilitate, VAs. Recent data highlight the relati...

acquired from electrodes and then delivers them to the ELP via a universal serial bus (USB) interface for storage, signal
processing, and graphic display. The proposed system can be installed anywhere (e.g., offices, homes, healthcare centers and

Primary cardiac tumours are rare, and metastases to the heart are much more frequent. Myxoma is the commonest benign primary tumour and sarcomas account for the majority of malignant lesions. Clinical manifestations are diverse, non-specific, and governed by the location, size, and aggressiveness. Imaging plays a central role in their evaluation, and familiarity with characteristic features is essential to generate a meaningful differential diagnosis. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the reference technique for evaluation of a suspected cardiac mass. Computed tomography (CT) provides complementary inform...

Cor triatriatum is a rare congenital anomaly. Most reports related to cor triatriatum have not considered computed tomography (CT) helpful to diagnose this entity or to evaluate its haemodynamic significance; there is only one case report in the literature in which single-section transaxial CT was used as the initial method to diagnose cor triatriatum in an asymptomatic adult. The role of electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated multidetector CT (MDCT) to diagnose cor triatriatum or to determine therapeutic strategy has not been reported. The development of ECG-gated cardiac MDCT provides outstanding detail of the intra or extracardi...

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is most often used in clinical and hospital settings for diagnosis and prognosis, but it is also used for systematic population studies and clinical trials where a repeatable, valid, and quantitative method is required for classification of ECG findings related to disease. Useful classification depends, in turn, on standardized methods of acquiring the data, on ... (Source: Springer Medicine titles)

F. Thiel, D. Kreiseler, and F. Seifert Electromagnetic waves can propagate through the body and are reflected at interfaces between materials with different dielectric properties. Therefore the reason for using ultrawideband (UWB) radar for probing the human body in the frequency range from 100 MHz up to 10 GHz is obvious and suggests an ... [Rev. Sci.
