On Ethics and Self-Policing in (Citizen) Science
Science is experiencing a boost in enthusiasm and participation from the Citizen Science Movement. For those familiar it conjures up images of kids, adults and seniors counting birds or counting stars at night. Having thousands of eyes and ears all over the globe helping a team of scientists collect or sort through piles of data is so amazing. And impactful and evolving. Not only can you help collect data but you can be apart of the research, too. Projects like Your Wild Life allow you sample species in your navel, under your arm and on your kitchen counter. However, decentralizing the scientific process doesn't mean tha...

Plantwatch: 'When gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of season'
In this cold weather, it lifts the spirits to see carpets of bright golden flowers of gorse bushes ablaze across commons, heaths, hedgerows, roadsides and derelict land.Gorse flowers are at their best around this time of year although they stay in flower most of the year, hence the saying "When gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of season". When the sun shines bright, the flowers smell of a heady aroma of coconut and vanilla that makes a wonderful flavouring for wine, although picking the flowers amongst the minefield of thorns on the bushes is difficult. There are signs of early spring flowers emerging, although the wea...

Fiber 101: Soluble Fiber vs Insoluble Fiber
(HealthCastle.com) We all know the benefits of fiber! Fiber not only promotes gut health, but also helps reduce the risk of developing many chronic diseases. For instance, fiber prevents constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticulosis. A high-fiber diet is also linked to lower risk of developing some cancers, especially colon and breast cancer. In addition, it helps lower LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. Furthermore, high-fiber foods generally have a lower glycemic index value, an important element in managing Type 2 diabetes.

Post Op Recovery Questions – Lina’s Story
Hi Linda and fellow hysters. I am 43 and after 3 months of decapeptyl (and suffering the debilitating effects of a radically enforced menopause) treatment, I had my abdominal hysterectomy (kept my ovaries) on 30 Nov in order to remove an 8cm uterine fibroid.
All went really well as was expecting a longitudinal cut but with an unexpected change of surgeon at the v last minute (my own surgeon was off sick) I had the under-tummy incision, which was great.
Post- op ok-ish except I suffered 5 continual bouts of dreadful vomiting on the first day after the op which was incredibly painful, and trying to hold off the urges as i w...

Wild vegetable mixes sold in the markets of Dalmatia (southern Croatia)
Conclusions:
The rich tradition of eating many wild greens may result both from strong Venetian and Greek influences and the necessity of using all food resources available in the barren, infertile land in the past. Although the number of wild-collected green vegetables is impressive we hypothesize that it may have decreased over the years, and that further in-depth local ethnobotanical studies are needed in Dalmatia to record the disappearing knowledge of edible plants. Higgs boson was just a start for Cern's atom smasher – other mysteries await
The Large Hadron Collider will shut down for an overhaul in preparation for exploring questions of dark matter, extra dimensions and other universesWhen it comes to shutting down the most powerful atom smasher ever built, it's not simply a question of pressing the off switch. In the French-Swiss countryside on the far side of Geneva, staff at the Cern particle physics laboratory are taking steps to wind down the Large Hadron Collider. After the latest run of experiments ends next month, the huge superconducting magnets that line the LHC's 27km-long tunnel must be warmed up, slowly and gently, from -271 Celsius to room tempe...

But the result they had spied – a simple number five followed by the Greek letter sigma, in a little red box – was all the hundreds gathered needed to know. It told them that the Higgs boson, or at least a par...

What the male bowerbird can teach us about home furnishings
Take a lesson in DIY from the male bowerbird, which elaborately decorates its nest to seduce its mateThe male bowerbird has one dazzling bachelor pad. His nest, woven around a tree and carpeted with moss, takes years to build. Each bowerbird has his own exquisite taste in decorations; some prefer neat arrangements of blue and purple flowers while others enjoy the classic minimalism of dark seeds and glass. Common embellishments include leaves, coins, nails, shells and even live insects. This elaborate ritual is sacrosanct, because the bowerbird knows that if his bower isn't beautiful, he will not seduce his mate. But n...

Do we have to stop anticoagulant and platelet‐inhibitor treatments during proctological surgery?
Conclusion During proctological surgery the overall risk of postoperative bleeding is low, but it can occur up to 3 weeks after surgery and is often severe. Maintenance treatment with oral anticoagulants is the most important risk factor, aggravated by a change to heparin. Clopidogrel also significantly increases the bleeding risk. Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic by David Quammen – review
Killer organisms and viruses that jump from animal to human are tracked down in this forensic studyLet's not beat around the bush. This is an extraordinary book. David Quammen has woven a story of incredible complexity; a detective story with a difference, with a host of murderers – all of them real. They are viruses, bacteria and single-celled organisms which infect other animals, but every now and then make the jump – spill over – to our own species. Each chapter follows the quest to track down a new villain. An international team of detectives works on the cases, and Quammen follows them as they uncover the traces...

Gaseous emission during the composting of pig feces from Chinese Ganqinfen system.
Abstract
The Ganqinfen system - a process of manually cleaning animal feces by means of a shovel - is a widely used manure separating method in Chinese pig farms. Ganqinfen pig feces and chopped corn stalks were mixed at the ratio of 7:1, and composted in 1.5m(3) rotting boxes for 70d. Evolution of CH(4), N(2)O and NH(3) during composting, and the effects of turning and covering, were studied in this research. Results showed that 20-39% and 0.5-4% of total nitrogen were lost in the form of NH(3) and N(2)O respectively, and 0.1-0.9% of initial organic carbon was emitted as CH(4). Turning enhanced air exchange in the...

Unanswered questions about Ukip MEP's researcher highlight lack of transparency and oversight over spending of EU public fundsOne of the UK Independence Party's (Ukip) popular battle cries in recent years has been its condemnation of the European parliament wasting taxpayers' money on its bureaucrats and pet projects. It's a political strategy that has, in part, helped it to steadily improve its poll rating. But, following a rather frustrating exchange of emails with the party, I would argue that Ukip has its own questions to answer over its use of taxpayers' money on its officials and pet causes. The story started back in S...

Haemorrhoids: 21st‐century management
We read with interest the leading article from Ross et al. recently published in Colorectal Disease on the “21st century management” on the burden of haemorrhoidal disease.[1] We commend the authors for their clear statements about the currently evolving procedures to treat haemorhoids and the still unresolved questions on their risks, long‐term results and patient satisfaction. We also fully share their views for the need for robust evidence to clarify therapeutic choices on the basis of large well‐conducted multicentre trials.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria inhabiting natural corrosion deposits from marine steel structures.
We describe the abundance and diversity of total and metabolically active SRB within five natural corrosion deposits located within tidal or low water zone and showing either normal or accelerated corrosion. By using molecular techniques, such as quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis, and sequence cloning based on 16S rRNA, dsrB genes, and their transcripts, we demonstrated a clear distinction between SRB population structure inhabiting normal or accelerated low-water corrosion deposits. Although SRB were present in both normal and accelerated low-water corrosion deposits...

Benign anal and perianal polypoid neoplasms and tumor-like lesions.
Abstract
Mesenchymal anal and perianal tumors are relatively uncommon. The majority are malignant. Benign mesenchymal anal tumors are rare. Some are common stromal neoplasms, but with the rare presentation as anal polyps. Other lesions are rare, but unique to the anal/perianal region. Common keratinous cysts might uncommonly present as anal polyps, while other rare cysts are unique to the anogenital region. A retrospective review study of 493 anal and perianal specimens conducted over seven years showed twenty cases (4.0%) of benign anal polypoid lesions. We excluded the usual fibroepithelial polyps, anal tags, pap...

The use of a detachable anvil enables an easier and safer stapled hemorrhoidopexy
Abstract Following the excision of hemorrhoidal nodes during hemorrhoidectomy, intense pain is reported to be the main postoperative
problem, which can last for several weeks. Hemorrhoidopexy, an alternative treatment for hemorrhoids introduced in the late
nineties, replaced hemorrhoid excision by a reduction of the hemorrhoids to their normal anatomical position, via an excision
of a mucosal ring above the internal hemorrhoidal cushions. The latter excision results in minimal or no postoperative pain.
In 2010, a new variant of the hemorrhoidopexy set was introduced in the European market. The variations of ...
