CMS Releases 2016 Open Payments Teaching Hospital List
As they did on October 1st last year, yesterday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released an updated Teaching Hospital list and increased (slightly) reporting thresholds for the next year’s reporting cycle. In looking at the new hospital file, CMS has added to its list—the agency included 1,203 last year, it is up to 1,222 this year. In terms of a “de minimis” threshold, if a payment or other transfer of value is less than $10.22 ($10.21 for 2015; $10.18 for 2014), unless the aggregate amount transferred to, requested by, or designated on behalf of a covered recipient exceeds $102.19 in a cale...

Legislation Introduced to Modify Hospital Quality Star Ratings Release
We have previously covered another of CMS’ transparency initiatives—its hospital star ratings—and some of the concerns industry has with the program. After a delay, CMS released the star ratings amid significant industry criticism. At the same time, a recent bipartisan bill would require CMS to take down overall hospital quality star ratings. Of note, according to a recent analysis, these rankings have been found to actually further confuse consumers, rather than provide actionable data to improve health care choices and the market overall. Bill in Congress Reps. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) and James Renacci (R-Ohio) in...

Inpatient Hospital Rotation: Epilogue
My inpatient hospital medicine rotation is over, and it ended much differently than it began.   You’ll recall from my inpatient hospital rotation: Day 1 post that the word for hospital internal medicine was chill.   But… Soon after I wrote that post, things changed.   I learned a another term: attending dependent, as in“It depends on […]The postInpatient Hospital Rotation: Epilogue appeared first onInside PA Training.

Physicians, You CAN Have It All: How To Run A Business And Also Practice Medicine
It’s no secret that physicians are experiencing burnout at an exponentially increasing rate in our progressively bureaucratic healthcare system. Many are looking for “alternative careers” as their salvation. I receive emails from physicians all the time, asking for advice about getting out of clinical medicine, since I have spent a few years outside it myself. As my own career pendulum has swung from full time clinical work to full time editorial and/or consulting work, I’ve found that the best mix is somewhere in between. If you’re like me, you’re happiest using both halves of your brai...

CMS: Hospital and Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Changes to Promote Innovation, Flexibility, and Improvement in Patient Care Proposed Rule
CMS recently released a proposed rule updating the Conditions of Participation (CoP) for 6,228 hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAH) that participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. By incorporating elements of the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Quality Strategy and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Strategy to Combat Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, CMS says the revisions aim to reduce readmissions; ease barriers to care; stem hospital-acquired conditions, including infections; address workforce shortages; and advance non-discrimination protection...

CMS Delays Hospital Ratings – No Stars Yet
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) postponed publication of its hospital ratings after numerous members of Congress objected to the rating system's possible unfairness. The publication may now be published this month, but could see delay if there is additional pressure from industry and/or Congress. Originally, CMS had planned to release a new star ratings system on Hospital Compare on April 21. The current star ratings, which went live in April 2015, incorporate only patient experience scores, and the new overall star ratings intend to include quality measures such as readmissions, mortality, effective...

How Dollars for Docs Hospital Connection Was Formed
Conclusion In conclusion, we see that ProPublica went to great lengths to try to shed light on industry payments to physicians: pulling from several related (and non-related) databases to come up with the information. While the statistical correlation is high (.93 according to ProPublica), it is hard to be certain that the database is not only reliable, but a beneficial resource for patients.       Related StoriesDollars for Doc’s Media Bomb – Examples of Expanding a Story on HospitalsCMS Hosts Special Open Door ForumPhRMA and BIO Release Drug Maker Communication Guidelines

Industry Take on Proposed Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment Changes for 2017
Conclusion Proposed comments were due to CMS at close of business on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. It will be interesting to see how many comments CMS received, suggesting ways to improve the system without causing concerns about fraud and abuse, and whether CMS is able to make any changes before the January 1, 2017 deadline.       Related StoriesCMS Releases New Prescription Drug Cost DataFDA and CMS Call for Nationwide ChangesRocky Start to CMS ACO Program

A Review of CMS ' Hospital Compare Website
As we reported, in July CMS released its first-ever hospital quality star ratings on its Hospital Compare website. The overall star ratings are based on 64 quality measures grouped under three process categories—effectiveness of care, efficient use of medical imaging, and timeliness of care—and four outcomes categories: mortality, patient experience, readmissions, and safety of care. Many of the hospitals widely considered to be the nation’s best were unable to achieve a five-star rating. Unfairly punishes hospitals According to a recent analysis, this star rating system rewards hospitals that serve mostly affluent...

CMS Not Moving Forward With October Update of Hospital Compare
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced it will not update its overall hospital quality star ratings on Hospital Compare in October. “CMS decided not to proceed with the October update to continue its examination of potential changes to the Star Rating methodology based on public feedback,” the agency said. The star ratings released last December will remain on the Hospital Compare website until the next update, CMS said. Flawed Methodology and Hospital Criticism When the ratings were posted in July 2016, they were heavily criticized by hospital groups and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (...
