Functional Impairment in Adult Sleepwalkers: A Case-Control Study

This study aims to screen the effective core drug patterns in primary insomnia treatment of three prestigious Chinese clinicians. Methods: A triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial will be performed. Three clinicians will diagnose and treat every eligible patient individually and independently, producing three prescriptions from three clinicians for every patient. Patients will equally be randomized to one of four groups -- medical group A, medical group B, medical group C, or placebo group -- and observed for efficacy of treatment. The sample will include primary insomnia patients meeti...

Lack Of Sleep Alters Genes
Just one week of abnormal, insufficient sleep is enough to dramatically alter the activity of human genes, according to a new study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research, conducted at the University of Surrey, England, has revealed that insufficient sleep - less than six hours a night - affects the activity of over 700 of our genes. Step into the Twilight Zone: Day 25, or A Walk Through Santiago's Witching Hour
"The witching hour, someone had once whispered to her, was a special moment in the middle of the night when every child and every grown-up was in a deep deep sleep, and all the dark things came out from hiding and had the world all to themselves." Roald Dahl, "The BFG," about five minutes before the protagonist is kidnapped by a giant. As a kid I was obsessed with this idea of a witching hour, a time when, I imagined, every person living in my town, everyone I'd ever met and everyone they'd ever met, would be simultaneously asleep. I drove myself into paroxysms of insomnia trying to make it to that magic moment when I wou...

Lack of sleep not the killer it's made out to be
Conclusion This small crossover study found that insufficient sleep causes changes in the levels of RNA in the blood. However, there are some important limitations: Only a week of insufficient sleep compared to a week of sufficient sleep was examined. It is not known whether the RNA changes indicate what would happen in the longer term if a person continuously had less than six hours of sleep a night, for example over a number of years. The people in this trial were all young, healthy adults who normally got around eight hours sleep a night, so it is not clear if the findings of this research would apply to the wider...

Worry over antipsychotic drugs in care homes
Conclusion This study looks at the changing use of psychotropic medication in older people moving from the community into care homes in Northern Ireland. Researchers found a sharp increase in people being prescribed these medicines once they enter care. The study was well conducted and uses reliable national data on community prescriptions. However, as the authors point out, it has some limitations: Most importantly, the study did not have clinical information for the individuals included in the study, so it could not assess whether drug prescriptions were appropriate or not. Insomnia Study May Lead To Reduction In The Risk Of Suicide In People With Depressive Symptoms

The Clinical and Forensic Toxicology of Z-drugs.
Abstract The Z-drugs zolpidem, zopiclone, and zaleplon were hailed as the innovative hypnotics of the new millennium, an improvement to traditional benzodiazepines in the management of insomnia. Increasing reports of adverse events including bizarre behavior and falls in the elderly have prompted calls for caution and regulation. Z-drugs have significant hypnotic effects by reducing sleep latency and improving sleep quality, though duration of sleep may not be significantly increased. Z-drugs exert their effects through increased γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transmission at the same GABA-type A receptor as benzodiaz...

Sleep-dependent memory consolidation in patients with sleep disorders
Summary: Sleep can improve the off-line memory consolidation of new items of declarative and non-declarative information in healthy subjects, whereas acute sleep loss, as well as sleep restriction and fragmentation, impair consolidation. This suggests that, by modifying the amount and/or architecture of sleep, chronic sleep disorders may also lead to a lower gain in off-line consolidation, which in turn may be responsible for the varying levels of impaired performance at memory tasks usually observed in sleep-disordered patients. The experimental studies conducted to date have shown specific impairments of sleep-dependent c...

Conclusion.
