Work can be a drag sometimes no matter how much you love your job. But for those who experience migraines, trying to make it through a workday in the midst of an episode can be downright excruciating. Migraines aren’t just a big deal to those who directly suffer from them, either. According to the National Headache Foundation, missed workdays and reduced productivity due to migraines cost the American economy more than $20 billion annually. That may seem like an overly hefty price, but it makes sense if you understand how hard it is to get almost anything done in the midst of a migraine, and consider the millions of ...

Migraine headaches: Could nerve stimulation help?
Are you one of the 20 million to 40 million people in the US suffering with migraine headaches? Do epilepsy and migraine share a genetic link?
Conclusion This paper suggests there is a link between the number of close relatives with a seizure disorder and the likelihood that an individual with epilepsy will also suffer from migraines with aura. However, it seems that the researchers were only interested in what they term ‘additional’ family members, and did not take into account the fact that to be eligible for this study at least two siblings or a parent and child both had to suffer from epilepsy. There seems to be the possibility that if, for example, four members of a family were enrolled in the study but the family had no further affected members, all me...

Nurtec – Novel New Migraine Treatment
Nurtec (rimagepant) is the newest migraine abortive treatment approved by the FDA. It has been almost 30 years since we have had anything new to stop a migraine attack. Imitrex (sumatriptan) was the first triptan FDA approved for the treatment of acute migraines in 1992. Since that time, several other similar triptans were approved but they all had the same mechanism to stop migraines. In early 2020, the FDA approved an entirely new class of migraine attack medications called “gepants.” Gepants work by an entirely different way than the triptans. Nurtec is the newest gepant and has some unique features to stop ...

Does Insurance Cover Botox Injections for Migraine Headaches?
Unfortunately no insurance company covers Botox therapy for generic headaches. Many will cover Botox for chronic migraines, which have been unresponsive to standard preventative therapies. In 2011, the FDA approved Botox for treating chronic migraines which have been unresponsive to an adequate trial of preventative medications. Preventative medications do not include the use of any narcotic pain killers. Insurance companies have made it difficult for patients to obtain Botox payment authorization, by putting in place numerous qualification barriers – if they cover Botox at all. Insurance companies do require e...

New Drug To Treat Migraines Shows Promise
(CNN) — A new drug to treat migraines has shown promise in a large-scale clinical trial, offering hope to people unable to use current treatment options. The drug, ubrogepant, showed greater rates of pain and symptom relief from migraine compared to a placebo, with more than 20% of participants given the drug reporting to be pain-free within two hours and more than 34% relieved of the most bothersome symptoms linked to migraine, which include light and noise sensitivity. This is compared to 14% and 27%, respectively, from the placebo. “Having ubrogepant as a potential new medication for the acute treatment of m...

AVP-825 Breath-Powered Intranasal Delivery System Containing 22 mg Sumatriptan Powder vs 100 mg Oral Sumatriptan in the Acute Treatment of Migraines (The COMPASS Study): A Comparative Randomized Clinical Trial Across Multiple Attacks.
CONCLUSIONS: AVP-825 (containing 22 mg sumatriptan nasal powder) provided statistically significantly greater reduction of migraine pain intensity over the first 30 minutes following treatment, and greater rates of pain relief and pain freedom within 15 minutes, compared with 100 mg oral sumatriptan. Sustained pain relief and pain freedom through 24 and 48 hours was achieved in a similar percentage of attacks for both treatments, despite substantially lower total systemic drug exposure with AVP-825. Treatment was well tolerated, with statistically significantly fewer atypical sensations with AVP-825. PMID: 2594101...

Youth With Migraines Twice as Likely to Have Anxiety, Depression
This study “is one more piece of evidence supporting our need to address and improve mental health care for youth,” wrote Jessica Hauser Chatterjee, M.D., Ph.D., and Heidi Blume, M.D., M.P.H., of the Seattle Children’s Research Institute in anaccompanying commentary. “It is likely that youth with migraine are particularly vulnerable to experiencing significant adverse effects and poor outcomes related to mental health disorders, but more work is needed to investigate these associations. CGRP: A new era for migraine treatment
Migraine is a common medical condition, affecting as many as 37 million people in the US. It is considered a systemic illness, not just a headache. Recent research has demonstrated that changes may begin to occur in the brain as long as 24 hours before migraine symptoms begin. Many patients have a severe throbbing headache, often on only one side of the head. Some people are nauseated with vomiting. Many are light sensitive (photophobic) and sound sensitive (phonophobic), and these symptoms can persist after the pain goes away. There are a variety of migraine subtypes with symptoms that include weakness, numbness, visual c...
