LITFL Search
The problem with providing education in the hospital environment is the persistent and unwarranted use of Internet Explorer which acts like a cubist Picasso converter to contort the website into a random series of incoherent text boxes Review of the old site highlighted a few functionality issues. One of the most frustrating elements of moving to a scalable mobile responsive design was the dropdown menus. We had far too much information crammed into an unpredictable space which was only intermittently visible…so they have been discarded with the new build. We have decided to run with ‘single menu tabs’ li...

FindZebra: A Search Engine That Diagnoses Rare Diseases
The Danish researchers behind FindZebra would not be happy about my title as they published a warning on the top of their search engine with the message: “This is a research project to be used only by medical professionals.” This search engine only uses medical databases similarly to SciencerollSearch and named the rare disease correctly after entering the symptoms 67%  of the time, compared to 32% using Google. I think educating both patients and medical professionals about the proper use of search engines and operators would provide even better results. Here is their description. There are close to 7,000 rar...

This study describes principles commonly applied to authorship order decisions within the medical education community and educators' opinions about the significance of authorship order. Approach: A questionnaire was developed to ascertain current practices related to authorship decisions. Sixteen items were rated in terms of frequency of actual use and the desirability of the practice using a 4-point rating scale: 1 (never), 2 (sometimes), 3 (often), and 4 (always). Additional questions addressed the perceived significance of authorship order. The last set of questions provided information about respondents' personal and c...

Given the critical nature of conducting an effective search, the goal of this commentary is to provide practical guidance and insight on how to effectively fulfill the role as chair of a search committee. Literature and institutional polices regarding best practice...

Cytotoxic interactions of bare and coated NaGdF4:Yb(3+):Er(3+) nanoparticles with macrophage and fibroblast cells.
Abstract The lanthanide nano-compounds are well suited to serve as fluorescent and magnetic contrast agents and luminescent labels. Although they are considered as promising materials for bio-imaging and bio-sensors in vivo or in vitro, the amount of data is still insufficient for deep understanding the toxicity of these nanomaterials. This knowledge is of great importance in the light of growing use of the biofunctionalized nanoparticles, which raises some questions about safety of these materials. Despite lanthanide-doped NaGdF4 nanocrystals are considered as non-toxic, here we present the data showing the fatal...
