Silver nanoparticles are lethal to the ciliate model Tetrahymena and safe to the pike silverside Chirostoma estor.
This study is the first report on microscopic and ultrastructural changes in Tetrahymena after exposure to significantly low concentrations of UTSA AgNPs with antiprotozoal efficacy without evidence of harmful effects on fish. These results provide the basis for further studies of both pet aquarium and commercial fish that may validate these findings at a larger experimental scale, taking into account AgNPs bioaccumulation, safety for human consumption and environmental impact. Synthesis of Iron Nanoparticles Using Sargassum wightii Extract and Its Impact on Serum Biochemical Profile and Growth Response of Etroplus suratensis Juveniles
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2022 Apr 20. doi: 10.1007/s12011-022-03236-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study focuses on the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles using plant extracts as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents. Aqueous seaweed extracts with the addition of iron solution were mixed using a magnetic stirrer which resulted in a color change indicating the formation of iron nanoparticles. The iron nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using Sargassum wightii extract. The synthesized iron nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a...

Ultrastructural characteristics of the accumulation of iron nanoparticles in the intestine of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758) under aquaculture
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 15;264:115477. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115477. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring the development of nanotechnology, the production of many substances containing nanoparticles leads to the release of various nanoparticles into the environment, including the water ecosystem. The main goal of the current research was to study the ultrastructural characteristics of the entry and bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the small intestine of Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus, 1758), as well as the pathomorphological changes in the fish organism. Two different doses (10 and 100 mg) of Fe3O4 nanop...

Propolis nanoparticles relieved the impacts of glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia
In this study, propolis nanoparticles were shown to relieve the impacts of glyphosate-induced oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia. The control group was fed a basal diet and maintained in a glyphosate-free water (control). Simultaneously, the other three groups were exposed to sublethal concentrations of glyphosate (0.6 mg/L) and fed diets containing 0 and 10 g propolis and 10 g propolis nanoparticles for 4 weeks. Nile tilapia exposed to glyphosate for 2 and 4 weeks exhibited a significant increase in serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, and creatinine values compared to the ...

Dietary Effect of Probiotic and Prebiotic on Some Mucus Indices of Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) Exposed to Silver Nanoparticles
This study aimed to investigate the effect of using Pediococcus acidilactici and Agaricus bisporus separately and in combination with silver carp's mucosal immune system indices and finally the possibility of reducing the toxicity of silver nanoparticles in silver carp. After calculating LC50, the sub-lethal toxicity test was performed to sub-lethal concentration of silver nanoparticles for 14 days. Fish skin mucus was collected in polyethylene bags containing 10 ml of 50 mM sodium chloride for future analysis. Results of skin mucosal indices activity showed significant changes in treatments fed with additives compared to ...

Toxicokinetics of silver in the goldfish Carassius auratus under simultaneous waterborne and diet-borne exposures to silver nanoparticles
In this study, the uptake and elimination kinetics of silver nanoparticles in fish (Carassius auratus), via simultaneous water and dietary exposure, was investigated and compared with ionic silver (AgNO3). Silver concentration in the tissues of C. auratus after the uptake phase was similar between nanoparticles and ionic treatments. Upon exposure to nanoparticles, Ag concentration in the different tissues of C. auratus was significantly different (Ag[liver] > Ag[intestine] > Ag[gill] > Ag[muscle]). The liver presented the highest amount of Ag among all organs, and no elimination was detected throughout the elimina...
