Synthesis of antibiotic loaded polylactic acid nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
CONCLUSION: Polylactic acid nanoparticles loaded with ofloxacin and vancomycin showed a higher antibacterial activity. Polymeric nanoparticles are a possible alternative for drug design against pathogenic bacterial strains of public health interest. PMID: 28527243 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion The most important lesson learned from Superstorm Sandy was the need for a dynamic and flexible monitoring process and strategy to understand and respond quickly to health needs in the areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Are Australians concerned about nanoparticles? A comparative analysis with established and emerging environmental health issues.
CONCLUSIONS: Current public concern over the risks of nanoparticles is low. However, a reframing of the issue towards 'chemicals' is likely to have a negative effect on risk perceptions. Exposure to Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Is Associated With Activation of Mitogen-activated Protein Kinases Signaling and Apoptosis in Rat Lungs.
CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these data suggest that high-dose respiratory exposure to CeO2 nanoparticles is associated with lung inflammation, the activation of signaling protein kinases, and cellular apoptosis, which may be indicative of a long-term localized inflammatory response. Comparison of respiratory toxicity of TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles after intravenous instillation: an experimental study.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that TiO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles used in our study were transferred from the bloodstream to the respiratory tract, but this effect was not observed at 28 days after i.v. injection, probably due to their removal from the respiratory tract. X-rays reveal uptake of nanoparticles by soya bean crops
(European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) Scientists have for the first time traced engineered nanoparticles, taken up from soil by crop plants, and analyzed the chemical states of their metallic elements. Zinc dissolves and accumulates throughout the plants; cerium does not dissolve, but CeO2 nanoparticles were detected in plant tissue. This contributes to the controversial debate on plant toxicity of nanoparticles and entry of engineered nanoparticles into the food chain.

The Race to Save Lives: Demonstrating the Use of Social Media for Search and Rescue Operations
Conclusions Social media provides a standardized and familiar platform that can serve to create bridges, offering options for cooperation, coordination and collaboration in order to improve preparedness and response to emergencies. Utilizing social media in an emergency, as was well displayed during the exercise conducted in the present study, enabled to locate and evacuate casualties more rapidly and effectively. Thus, social media can contribute towards saving lives during a disaster. Applying systematic review search methods to the grey literature: a case study examining guidelines for school-based breakfast programs in Canada
Conclusions This article demonstrated a feasible and seemingly robust method for applying systematic search strategies to identify web-based resources in the grey literature. The search strategy we developed and tested is amenable to adaptation to identify other types of grey literature from other disciplines and answering a wide range of research questions. This method should be further adapted and tested in future research syntheses.

The Effects of Nanoparticles Containing Iron on Blood and Inflammatory Markers in Comparison to Ferrous Sulfate in Anemic Rats

A comparison of results of empirical studies of supplementary search techniques and recommendations in review methodology handbooks: a methodological review
ConclusionsThere is reasonable consistency between recommended best practice (handbooks) and current practice (methodological studies) as it relates to the application of supplementary search methods.The methodological studies provide useful information on the effectiveness of the supplementary search methods, often seeking to evaluate aspects of the method to improve effectiveness or efficiency. In this way, the studies advance the understanding of the supplementary search methods. Further research is required, however, so that a rational choice can be made about which supplementary search strategies should be used, and when.

Failure or success of search strategies to identify adverse effects of medical devices: a feasibility study using a systematic review
Conclusions The search filters currently available for adverse drug effects are not necessarily useful for searching adverse effects data of medical devices. The presence of adverse effects terms in the bibliographic records of articles on medical devices, however, indicates that combinations of adverse effects search terms may be useful in search strategies in MEDLINE and Embase. The results, therefore, suggest that not only a search filter for the adverse effects of medical devices is feasible, but also that it should be a research priority.

Synthetic nanoparticles achieve the complexity of protein molecules
(Carnegie Mellon University) Chemists at Carnegie Mellon have demonstrated that synthetic nanoparticles can achieve the same level of structural complexity, hierarchy and accuracy as biomolecules. The study, published in Science, also reveals the atomic-level mechanisms behind nanoparticle self-assembly, providing an important window into how nanoparticles form. The findings could help guide the construction of nanoparticles, including those that can be used in the creation of computer chips, materials, drugs and drug delivery devices.
