Detransition Narratives Trouble the Simple Attribution of Madness in Transantagonistic Contexts: A Qualitative Analysis of 16 Canadians' Experiences
Cult Med Psychiatry. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s11013-023-09838-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmerging evidence suggests that transgender individuals are more likely than cisgender peers to receive a diagnosis with a primary mental disorder. Attributions of madness, though, may serve the social function of dismissing and discrediting transgender individual's self-perceptions. The narratives of individuals who stop or reverse an initial gender transition who also identify as living with mental health conditions can sometimes amplify these socio-political discourses about transgender people. Through a critical mental heal...

Impact of lanadfill characteristics on the atmospheric exposure to halogenated flame retardants in gulls
The objective of this study was to investigate how atmospheric exposure in ring-billed gulls to PBDEs and other HFRs is influenced by selected landfill characteristics (i.e., daily cover materials, waste types and tonnage). Miniature passive air samplers (PASs) combined with GPS dataloggers were deployed for ten days during six years on the back of wild-caught ring-billed gulls breeding in the Montreal area. Atmospheric levels of several PBDEs and other HFRs determined in PASs were found to increase with the presence probability of gulls in the two largest landfills using automotive shredder residues as daily cover materia...

Complementarity of plasma and stool for the characterization of children's exposure to halogenated flame retardants: Update on analytical methods and application to a Canadian cohort
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140222. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140222. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSixteen halogenated flame retardants including Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), Dechlorane-like compounds, and emerging halogenated flame retardants were measured in stool and plasma samples from children aged 8.9-13.8 years old. Samples were obtained from a Canadian cohort investigating the effect of contaminants on children's neurodevelopment in the Estrie region, Québec, Canada. The method for stool analysis developed for this study showed good recovery for all targeted compounds (73%-93%) with associated relat...

Colorectal polyp classification and management of complex polyps for surgeon endoscopists
Can J Surg. 2023 Sep 21;66(5):E491-E498. doi: 10.1503/cjs.011422. Print 2023 Sep-Oct.ABSTRACTSummaryIncreasing familiarity with advanced endoscopic excision techniques allows for more colorectal lesions to be removed without major surgery. Endoscopic excision with negative margins is adequate for most polyps and low-risk T1 cancers. The use of modern polyp classification techniques based on size, morphology and pit pattern by an experienced endoscopist allow for an optical diagnosis of these lesions and can predict, with high accuracy, which lesions contain malignant disease and the level of invasion. A surgeon endoscopist...

The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on total hip and knee arthroplasty in Ontario: a population-level analysis
CONCLUSION: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on elective THA and TKA case volumes and wait times was significant. Patients having surgery during the pandemic were less medically complex, had shorter length of hospital stays and had significantly less health care utilization.PMID:37734851 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.016122

Cholecystectomy following endoscopic clearance of common bile duct during the same admission
CONCLUSION: Cholecystectomy during the same admission after common bile duct clearance is safe, even in older adults with comorbidities. Compared with delayed cholecystectomy, it was not associated with adverse outcomes and may have prevented recurrence of biliary events.PMID:37734850 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.008322

Improving the quality of care of Canadians waiting for elective surgery: an important health care priority
Can J Surg. 2023 Sep 21;66(5):E474-E475. doi: 10.1503/cjs.015922. Print 2023 Sep-Oct.ABSTRACTSummaryThe backlog of cases on surgical wait lists is a substantial problem for surgical patients, their families, surgeons, health care systems and governments. There are several approaches governments can take to improve the health, well-being and surgical outcomes of waiting patients. First, provinces should consider patient-centred approaches to triaging that reflect pain, symptoms or functional gain, and approaches using multidisciplinary teams or centralized triage. Second, governments could provide prehabilitation and mental...

Transitioning to a Plant-Based Menu in Childcare: Identifying the Nutritional, Financial, and Logistical Considerations
Can J Diet Pract Res. 2023 Sep 21:1-5. doi: 10.3148/cjdpr-2023-015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInternational health organizations have called for a shift towards more plant-based foods as a way of promoting both individual health and environmental sustainability. Given the high percentage of children in Canada who attend childcare and the high volume of food provided in childcare, transitioning menus to incorporate plant-based foods could have important implications for both planetary and child health. The purpose of this case study is to describe a childcare centre's transition to a plant-based menu. A detailed nutriti...
