Examining the equity and diversity characteristics of academic general surgeons hired in Canada
CONCLUSION: The academic general surgery workforce appears to be somewhat diverse. However, there was substantial heterogeneity in diversity between hospitals, leaving room for improvement. We must be willing to examine our hiring processes and be transparent about them to build an equitable surgical workforce.PMID:37673438 | PMC:PMC10495166 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.006122

Navigating Nurses: Supporting Retention Through Mentorship
J Contin Educ Nurs. 2023 Sep;54(9):389-391. doi: 10.3928/00220124-20230816-02. Epub 2023 Sep 1.ABSTRACTRetaining nurses is critical. Doing so effectively requires identifying not only why some nurses are leaving but also why others are staying. Discovering a sense of belonging and opportunities for professional development, especially for early career nurses, are two common themes. A mentorship framework was created within a nurse residency program integrating both motives, with positive results for the mentors and mentees alike. Conceptualizing "Preparedness for Practice": Perspectives of Early-Career Family Physicians
CONCLUSIONS: Preparedness for practice involves an interplay of dynamic and complex constructs from competence, self-confidence, capability, and adaptability. Preparedness is more than possessing several competencies; it calls for integrating and applying competencies in complex and changing environments. This study aimed to start a discussion on what end point is desirable for residency education and proposed that the end point needs to move beyond competencies.PMID:37643091 | DOI:10.22454/FamMed.2023.294689
