The influence of care continuity and disclosure of sexual orientation in general practice on lesbian, bi+ and queer cisgender women's engagement with mental health services
CONCLUSION: GPs may be missing opportunities to promote continuity of care through developing trusting relationships with specific sub-populations of LBQ+ women, which in turn appears to sustain inequitable access to mental health care. To offer appropriate care and referrals for this population, GPs should provide safe and inclusive environments to enable comfortable and supportive discussions about sexual orientation when this is relevant to a person's health care.PMID:37574262 | DOI:10.1071/PY23001

Care of dementia in the general practice
Orv Hetil. 2023 Aug 13;164(32):1263-1270. doi: 10.1556/650.2023.32816. Print 2023 Aug 13.ABSTRACTTreating and caring for people with dementia is a complex task, which can be achieved through cooperation between primary and specialist healthcare, social care and specialist care services. General practitioners are key players in the prevention, screening, treatment and care of dementia. Our aim was to present the general practitioner's aspects of modern dementia care through different levels of prevention. Educating patients to lead a healthy lifestyle and optimising their cardiovascular status reduces the risk of developing...

General practitioners' perspectives regarding early developmental surveillance for autism within the australian primary healthcare setting: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: The study highlighted the need for practice and policy changes, including further training of GPs alongside sufficient time to complete developmental checks and appropriate financial remuneration through a Medicare billing item. Further research is needed on implementation and scale up of a national surveillance program for early identification of developmental disabilities, including autism.PMID:37563549 | PMC:PMC10416397 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-023-02121-6

Exploring patients' advance care planning needs during the annual 75+ health assessment: survey of Australian GPs' views and current practice
CONCLUSIONS: GPs showed a high level of support and involvement in discussing ACP during 75+ health assessments. ACP support during 75+ health assessments was often provided directly by the GP or via the practice nurse. Given the international evidence that ACP training programs improve skills and knowledge, and foster positive attitudes towards ACP, there is an important need to continue funding ACP training programs for GPs and practice nurses.PMID:37558212 | DOI:10.1071/PY22227

Web-based interventions to improve blood pressure control in patients with hypertension: a protocol for a systematic review
Introduction Hypertension is the major cause of cardiovascular disease and mortality in the world. Blood pressure control (BPC) is recognised as a key measure in the management of hypertension. Several studies have been conducted assessing the impact of specific web-based interventions in improving BPC. Our systematic review intends to identify all the available web-based interventions and determine if and which are more effective than usual care in improving BPC. Methods and analysis We will include randomised control trials completed until April 2023 including patients diagnosed with hypertension comparing the effect of...

Pain management in indigenous and tribal peoples: a scoping review protocol
Introduction Effective and culturally safe pain management can facilitate analgesia and improve the quality of life. Individualised, multimodal and multidisciplinary approaches are highly recommended. There exist gaps in the knowledge on pain management, in terms of the assessment and/or treatment, in indigenous peoples and the currently available information is scattered in the literature. A scoping review will provide an overview or evidence map on the variety of approaches used in different cultures, in different parts of the world. Methods and analysis The search strategy comprises three stages. The first stage identi...

Time to re-envisage culturally responsive care: Intersection of participatory health research and implementation science
CONCLUSION: There is a need to move away from conventional approaches to conceptualizing and generating evidence on culturally responsive care. Incorporating participatory implementation methodologies can provide a new lens to investigate and support whole system implementation strategies.IMPACT: The combination of participatory and implementation methodologies is both theoretically and empirically informed. Engaging stakeholders in the co-design and co-production of evidence and solutions to long standing problems has the potential to increase the likelihood of influencing iterative and sustainable implementation and chan...
