Second primary malignancies in patients with lymphoma in Denmark after high-dose chemotherapy and autologous haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation: a population-based, retrospective cohort study
Lancet Haematol. 2023 Sep 6:S2352-3026(23)00212-0. doi: 10.1016/S2352-3026(23)00212-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Second primary malignancies (SPMs) are known complications after chemotherapy, but the risk is not well characterised for patients with lymphoma treated with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT). We aimed to investigate the rate of SPMs in this population relative to matched control individuals from the general population.METHODS: In this retrospective, population-based cohort study, patients aged 18 years or older with an aggressive lymphoma who r...

Her work paved the way for blockbuster obesity drugs. Now, she ’s fighting for recognition
When Svetlana Mojsov heard the spring 2021 announcement, she was startled. The Canada Gairdner International Award, a prestigious biomedical research prize, would be bestowed on three scientists for work underpinning the diabetes and obesity drugs that have exploded in popularity in recent years. “I was really upset,” recalls Mojsov, a chemist at Rockefeller University. The Gairdner award marked the third time in 4 years that the same trio of scientists—Joel Habener at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Daniel Drucker at the University of Toronto, and Jens Juul Holst at the University of Copenhagen—were hon...

Arbovirology and Cold War Collaborations: A Transnational History of the Tick-borne Encephalitis Vaccine, 1930-1980
This article analyzes the history of immunization against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and specifically the processes that led to the creation and application of TBE vaccines in the Soviet Union and Austria. Rather than presenting the development of TBE vaccines from the perspective of national scientific schools, the article investigates their history as a transnational project, focusing on the connections among the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Austria, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It argues that biomedical research on TBE was profoundly intertwined with political and military agendas and depended on civil...

Long-term esophageal cancer risk and distinct surveillance intervals after a single endoscopy screening: a multicentre population-based cohort study
This study aimed to assess long-term esophageal cancer (EC) incidence and mortality after a single endoscopy screening.METHODS: We included individuals at high risk of EC aged 40-69 years who underwent endoscopy screening in 2007-2012 at six centres in rural China and had a baseline diagnosis of negative endoscopy findings, mild dysplasia, or moderate dysplasia. Participants were followed up for EC incidence and mortality. Cumulative incidence and mortality rates of EC were estimated by Kaplan-Meier analyses. Cox regression models were used to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for as...

Effectiveness and safety of atezolizumab-bevacizumab in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Aug 30;63:102179. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102179. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Atezolizumab-bevacizumab (atezo-bev) is recommended as first-line therapy for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). However, its effectiveness and safety in other populations, including those with Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class B cirrhosis, is unclear.METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, were searched from 1st May, 2020 till 5th October, 2022; the last date of access was January 31, 2023. Pooled progression-...

Increased risk of colon cancer after acute appendicitis: a nationwide, population-based study
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Aug 30;63:102196. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102196. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the most common digestive disease requiring emergency surgery. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in France. An increased risk of colorectal cancer after acute appendicitis has been suggested. We aimed to assess the frequency of hospitalization for colon cancer after appendicitis in a nationwide analysis.METHODS: Using the French Hospital Discharge Database (PMSI), we included all patients aged 18-59 years presenting with acute appendicitis between 2010 and 2015. Univari...

Efficacy and safety of upadacitinib maintenance therapy for moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in patients responding to 8 week induction therapy (U-ACHIEVE Maintenance): overall results from the randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, phase 3 maintenance study
Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2023 Sep 5:S2468-1253(23)00208-X. doi: 10.1016/S2468-1253(23)00208-X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Upadacitinib is an oral, selective, and reversible JAK inhibitor with demonstrated efficacy in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in a phase 2b induction trial, two phase 3 induction trials (U-ACHIEVE Induction and U-ACCOMPLISH), and a primary analysis of the first 451 patients entering a subsequent maintenance trial (U-ACHIEVE Maintenance). Here, we present overall results from the entire U-ACHIEVE Maintenance population.METHODS: In this randomised, place...

Organizational and budgetary impacts of the implementation of CAR-T cell therapies in a French academic hospital
This study highlighted the workload generated by the management of these new therapies, as well as the fragile balance of financing hospital stays. To date, it seems necessary and even essential to adapt the quotations of the acts dedicated to CAR-T cells activity and to provide adequate funding through an adapted pricing system.PMID:37679208 | DOI:10.1016/j.bulcan.2023.06.011
