Hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!
As for me, yesterday was a normal workday with business as usual. As I was typing away, I suddenly felt like the only person in the country working. I heard people laughing and could smell a waft of barbecue in the air. I was about to feel quite desperate for a vacation, when I decided what I really needed was a change in environment.
I took a walk. I felt the breeze on my face. I saw the shadows from trees creating unique patterns on the sidewalk in front of me. I heard birds crying out in the distance, a man whistling from afar. In the absence of a plan or a busy schedule, I co...

Anyone familiar with migraine will know the first signs of an impending attack. What might be a little less familiar is the precursor to the “first signs”, and what may also be unfamiliar is the thoughts that accompany those first symptoms. Today I want to talk about ways to manage this phase of a migraine – without medication.
As an aside, some people have suggested that there are ways to completely get rid of migraine, often suggesting that one of the problems could be around the numerous nerves that innervate the face, neck and scalp. One of the common suggestions is to have chiropractic or osteopathic...

I’d bet that, as a kid, you heard the phrase “Hard work never killed anyone.”
I can see why parents and teachers say it. After all, kids are prone to whining – about homework, chores, or anything that’s not exactly a lot of fun.
As adults, we’re sometimes averse to hard work too. Maybe we procrastinate, or we slack off.
Often, though, we work too hard. We put in long hours to impress our bosses, or simply to make a bit more money.
The thing is, Mom wasn’t telling the truth. Hard work can kill. Think about:

Even as we approach the vibrant summer months, and the days grow long and bright here in California, I’ve been thinking about winter. I grew up in France which has long, gray, snowy months sometimes starting as early as October. Now that I live in Los Angeles and bask in the sunshine nearly every day, I sometimes get pangs of nostalgia for those cold, meditative days of being snuggled up inside and watching the bare tree branches wave against the sky. I snap out of those pretty quickly and run outside and smell flowers or chase butterflies. Even if it’s January. Yes, the weather here is dreamalicious.

Despite the devastation, there are some wonderful sights in Christchurch right now. This one (above) made me smile today.
And this one was taken in Nelson after we had turned back to return to Christchurch last week. Cheerful things, sunflowers, and glorious colour on a rather gloomy and very grim day.

The world is moving at breakneck speed. Information is overflowing 24 hours a day. At work or in school we are busy, busy, busy. Lunch is wolfed down. When we get home there is still so much to do, so much we want before finally falling into the bed.
Sometimes this works fine. Somet...

By now we’ve all been introduced to the benefits of relaxation and the possibility that simple meditation can quite possibly alter our gray matter. Some also say it lowers blood pressure, improves attention span, and boosts our ability to empathize. We don’t need scientific proof to believe in the power of focus and relaxation, so we hunted down some tools to help us get down with our dharma. (After all, who ever said the path to enlightenment doesn’t require a few Amex payable weapons?).
From $12.95 to $345, these seven relaxation products have mostly left us with a new appreciation for plain old yoga ma...

As you know, Friday is about getting ready for the weekend. Today I decided not to pass on some of the horrendous puns shared with me by one of my esteemed colleagues (although I may drop just one in because I can!). Instead I thought this poem is a chance to consider being ‘in the now’, something clinicians working in pain management really need.
Salutation To The Dawn
Look to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendor of achievement,
For yesterday is but a dream
And to...

I have been intrigued about binaural beats for some time now without ever really diving headlong into them. I think if I’m being honest, I saw them as the lazy persons meditation, or maybe even meditation without the spiritual element.
Also, when they first hit the scene commercially speaking, they were ridiculously expensive and I know people that have spent literally thousands of dollars on programs from companies such as Holosync.
Having said that, people who I like, trust, and respect have been raving about their benefits for some while now and urging me to check them out. So when Carl approached my about writing a...

Sleep is so important for wellbeing (ask any young parent!), and yet many people with chronic pain have really poor and unrefreshing sleep, and very poor sleep habits. Some pain conditions show changes to the quality of the sleep stages (such as fibromyalgia for example), to the point where these changes can almost be diagnostic, while many people with chronic pain also have low mood in which sleep disruption is a common feature.
I’ve written about sleep several times over the past year, and today I provide links to some of these posts for your education and enjoyment.
Sleep problems in chronic pain and what helps ...

A Biofeedback Pen For Managing Stress

Miguel Bruns Alonso, a graduate student at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, has developed a pen that detects how much twitching and twirling it’s being put through.
People under stress tend to move and shake a pen more than someone who is calm. In order to try to get a therapeutic effect out of the pen, Bruns built in counter motion feedback that makes the pen a bit more difficult to move around. Though initial experiments have shown a marginal benefit, further studies and development may prove the benefit of the technology. From TU Delft:
Bruns, who studies industrial design, carried out various ex...
