Conclusions
An elevated mortality risk, especially from unnatural causes of death, was identified for offspring of parents with severe mental illness during the preschool years in an Asian society. There is an urgent need for multidisciplinary team approaches and risk management strategies to support psychiatric patients who are having difficulty with the transition to parenthood.

This study examined the impact of protective factors, assessed by means of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY), on desistance from violent reoffending in adolescents. Three samples included male adolescents in different stages of the judicial process: pre-trial (n = 111); during residential treatment (n = 66); and after release from a juvenile justice facility ( n = 47). The results lend support to the hypothesis that protective factors buffer or mitigate the risk of violent reoffending. Using regression analyses, in all samples, the addition of protective factors yielded a significant increment in ...

This article contrasts the application of preventive and predictive technologies in industry to those in healthcare. For years, risk managers have been discussing the rationing of care. This article presents the perspective of an engineering professional from the manufacturing industry who now consults with healthcare risk managers. The human being is often referred to as an "asset" in our society. Do we actually treat people as assets or liabilities? When preventive maintenance is routinely performed on a piece of equipment, the benefits are more reliable operations, increased productivity, and lower life cycle costs. If ...

The concept of the Vanishing Zero, which was first discussed 50 years ago in relation to pesticide residues in foods and food crops, focused on the unintended regulatory consequences created by ever-increasing sensitivity and selectivity of analytical methods, in conjunction with the ambiguous wording of legislation meant to protect public health. In the interim, the ability to detect xenobiotics in most substrates has increased from tens of parts per million to parts per trillion or less, challenging our ability to interpret the biological significance of exposures at the lowest detectable levels. As a result the focu...

This study shows alarming results with cause for concern where there is a huge variation in surgical trainee calculated and original documented values, as well as variations between trainees irrespective of training grades, which is a potential risk management issue. It highlights that inaccurate interpretation of these charts are not due to lack of clinical experience, but the fundamental problem lies within the lack of education and inconsistent poor documentation of these charts.

After a reference to the use of maps of radon-prone areas for indoor radon risk management, and to the methods used to produce them, there is a brief illustration of the geostatistical method of disjunctive kriging (DK) introduced by G. Matheron as a substitute for conditional expectation. There are some good reasons of using this method for the mapping of radon-prone areas as follows: (1) spatial correlation is exploited; (2) unbiasedness is conserved even in the conditions of quasi-stationarity; (3) lognormality of the data is not required; (4) choosing the point estimation allows drawing up smooth probability maps.
