Cyberchondria: Is Online Health Information Good for Patients? (Medscape)
Microsoft’s Ryen White and Eric Horvitz conducted a study into the growing condition dubbed “cyberchondria,” a phenomenon that describes anxieties about health instigated by reading information online. They compared the results of online searches for information about common symptoms including “headache,” “muscle twitches,” and “chest pain” between generic and medical search engines. The results alone are enough to give you palpitations.

The number of health-related Twitter users or discussions is still growing and while it’s easy to find Twitter messages focusing on a medical condition or specialty (search.twitter.com), visualizing these tiny bits of information is incredibly hard. Health Tweeder, managed by Pixels&Pills, aims to fill this gap.
Using the laboratory that is social media and Twitter, we’re visually and metaphorically using petri dishes to culture cells of dialogue on specific disease states. Each cell in a ptri dish represents a distinct tweet that has been gathered using relevant disease search terms, hashtags, and people w...

This article introduces and discusses the concept of academic search engine optimization (ASEO). Based on three recently conducted studies, guidelines are provided on how to optimize scholarly literature for academic search engines in general and for Google Scholar in particular. In addition, we briefly discuss the risk of researchers’ illegitimately ‘over-optimizing’ their articles.
Discussion:
ASEO should not be seen as a guide on how to cheat academic search engines. Rather, it is about helping academic search engines to understand the content of research papers and, thus, about how to make this content more widel...

I’ve been organizing scientific events and medical conferences in the virtual realm of Second Life for years. Though it has some serious limitations.
If you don’t have IT experience, it will be quite hard to download and install it.
Costs a lot if you want to upload content.
Creating slideshows is a complicated and long process.
In the last couple of months, I’ve been a consultant for a Hungarian team that developed Visuland which should be a perfect alternative for Second Life:
Takes about 20-30 seconds to enter: You come up with the idea to organize an event and send the specific links to the potenti...

It was the strangest headline this week. Let’s see a case study focusing on how to promote a device carefully and how to deliver false message about the use of online health information.
When Leroy Smith’s pregnant wife started going into labor, the desperate dad didn’t turn to the doctors, but to Google.
Unsure of what do when his wife, Emma Smith, began having contractions at their home, and fearing that the midwife wouldn’t arrive in time, the dad-to-be grabbed his Blackberry and Googled “how to deliver a baby.”
Leroy, a security guard, followed the step-by-step instructions he found ...

I gave an interview to one of the biggest Hungarian educational web portals, Felvi.hu about Webicina.com and Health 2.0. An excerpt:
Webicina.com is a freely accessible resource base for those who wish to read useful medical web pages, but cannot decide which ones are reliable and which ones are not. PeRSSonalized Medicine analyses the quality of Hungarian resources on health and diseases from a medical perspective, and presents them to the readers in a form that is easy to follow and does not require experience in informatics. The latest publications and posts in professional papers, medical blogs, news pages, video chann...

I’m really proud that I can organize and run the world’s first university credit course focusing on Web 2.0 and medicine at a medical school. This was the third, and so far most successful, semester with 115 students who filled a survey before and after the course. I hope I can publish the results in a peer-reviewed paper soon with the help of real experts in this field.
In the final lecture, I used Prezi.com again and talked about the future of medicine as well as the results of the surveys. I’ve already got some invitations to do at least a part of the course at other international universities. What is...

Dan Vorhaus at Genomics Law Report launched a great series featuring many scientists, legal and social experts who talked about the possible implications in genomics. My commentary focused on the web 2.0 aspect of personalized medicine. Now the series is over and they published an e-book which is a must-read for everyone who wants to know more about the ELSI of genomics or personalized medicine.
From October 5 to December 8, 2009, the Genomics Law Report featured a series of thirty-six guest commentaries by industry, academic and thought leaders in the fields of genomics and personalized medicine. Entitled What ELSI is New...

Do you remember the Dance Your PhD contest? The Science Dance Match-Up challenge is not a new one but still features really interesting videos.
This experiment began back in October 2008 with a challenge to scientists to interpret their Ph.D. theses in dance form, capture the dances on video, and upload them onto YouTube. Six weeks later, a panel of expert judges chose four winners, hailing from Australia, Germany, Canada, and the United States. (All of them have artistic backgrounds.)
The scientists then passed the baton to the artists. Each scientist was paired with a choreographer. Between November and January, the chor...
