Exposure of an anoxic and contaminated canal sediment: Mobility of metal(loid)s.

A derelict canal contains an estimated 9800 tonnes of anoxic sediment with highly elevated concentrations of trace elements. Lack of maintenance, reduced water levels and vegetation colonization threaten the stability of pollutants by removing existing waterlogged reduced conditions. A column leaching study of the sediment under increasingly oxidized conditions showed reductions in As mobility but increased heavy metal concentrations. In a reduced state, As mobility was higher (as a consequence of enhanced Fe and organic carbon solubility) whilst heavy metal concentrations in leachates were lower (due to markedly highe...

Conclusion: This is the first description of autosomal recessive FNDI presenting in the neonatal period. The unusual early clinical and radiological (MRI) presentation argues against gradual destruction of AVP secreting neurons as the pathophysiologic mechanism. Factors beside allelism of AVP related genes must influence the age of FNDI presentation given the founder effect demonstrated for the P26L mutation.

Bedwetting is a common childhood condition. It occurs when there is an accidental loss of urine during sleep. Bedwetting is also known as nocturnal enuresis or nighttime incontinence. It is normal in children who are under five years old. At this age, nighttime bladder control may not be established. Bedwetting is the most common pediatric-health issue. Int J Sports MedDOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1239500AbstractBlood doping improves physical performance in sport. This is the reason why the antidoping authorities subject athletes to blood tests. Plasma volume expanders are prohibited agents used to reduce an artificial increase in hematological values using different illegal practices. The aim of our study was to test whether desmopressin (DDAVP)-induced hemodilution would alter the concentration of hematological parameters used to detect blood doping in sports. This was an intra-subject crossover study. Venous blood samples were obtained from eight physically active males on two ...

Contact activation of blood factor XII (FXII, Hageman factor) in neat-buffer solution exhibits a parabolic profile when scaled as a function of silanized-glass-particle activator surface energy (measured as advancing water adhesion tension tau(a)(o)=gamma(lv)(o)costheta in dyne/cm, where gamma(lv)(o) is water interfacial tension in dyne/cm and theta is the advancing contact angle). Nearly equal activation is observed at the extremes of activator water-wetting properties -36<tau(a)(o)<72dyne/cm (0 degrees </=theta<120 degrees ), falling sharply through a broad minimum within the 20<tau(a)(o)<40dyne/cm ...

I thought I would share with you the parts of my book, Adolescent Assessment, that readers found the most interesting. One of the most popular topics was defense mechanisms. Anna Freud (1958), Sigmund's daughter, believed people defended themselves against anxiety with defense mechanisms. As you may have learned in Introductory Psychology, Freudians believe internal conflicts cause anxiety. To reduce this anxiety, people employ psychological defenses.
After many years of observing children, adolescents, and adults, and despite my extremely rigorous scientific training, I've concluded there is some merit to Freudian observa...

We have investigated the velocity field and associated particle transport in an evaporating water droplet using the tool of particle image velocimetry. Experiments were performed where single droplets containing polystyrene particles were exposed to evaporation. Our method applicable to droplets confined between two parallel surfaces differs from the conventional PIV techniques on the 3D droplets and removes many of the limitations associated with mapping of velocity field. To avoid refraction of light at the droplet surface we have studied the motion in a disc-shaped droplet which was prepared by confining the drop betwee...

Abstract: The optimal management of bleeding or its prophylaxis in patients with disorders of platelet count or function is controversial. The bleeding diathesis of these patients is usually mild to moderate: therefore, transfusion of platelet concentrates may be inappropriate, as potential adverse effects might outweigh its benefit. The availability of several anti-hemorrhagic drugs further compounds this problem, mainly because the efficacy/suitability of the various treatment options in different clinical manifestations is not well defined. In these guidelines, promoted by the Italian Society for Studies on Haemostasis ...

The authors report the results of a large epidemiological study addressing the risk factors for nocturnal enuresis. They conclude that patients with NMNE (those with daytime symptoms and encopresis) have the more severe condition compared to those with MNE. This is the first known epidemiological study to calculate this risk, and it confirms the impression of caretakers of children with NE that patients with NMNE have a more severe condition. Taken together with the results of a large epidemiological study by Yeung et al, who observed that patients with frequent bed-wetting have a more severe and longer lasting condition t...

The discovery of quasicrystals in 1984 changed our view of ordered solids as periodic structures and introduced new long-range-ordered phases lacking any translational symmetry. Quasicrystals permit symmetry operations forbidden in classical crystallography, for example five-, eight-, ten- and 12-fold rotations, yet have sharp diffraction peaks. Intermetallic compounds have been observed to form both metastable and energetically stabilized quasicrystals; quasicrystalline order has also been reported for the tantalum telluride phase with an approximate Ta1.6Te composition. Later, quasicrystals were discovered...

Abstract: The wetting behavior of molten pure Mg droplets on pure Ti substrate, a crucial phenomenon in the design of Mg matrix composites reinforced with Ti particles, was investigated by the sessile drop method. The contact angle was measured in high-purity argon (99.999%) at 1073K. In particular, the effects of two important parameters on the contact angle were evaluated: Mg evaporation during the wetting test; and surface oxide film of the substrate. The calculation method to estimate the modified contact angle involved taking the morphological changes of the droplet outline due to the evaporation into consideration. B...

In recent years a new understanding of trauma-associated hemorrhaging and trauma-induced coagulopathy has been achieved. This coagulopathy is multifactorial with the predominant mechanisms being tissue trauma, shock and hypoperfusion which can lead to hyperfibrinolysis by activation of the endothelium. Routinely tested coagulation parameters, such as prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time, are frequently employed for decision making but remain problematic as they do not give any information on clot stability, lysis or platelet function. Thrombelastometry seems to be a useful alternative. A pro-active anticipa...

Chunyin Qiu and Tiezheng Qian Using the mean-field diffuse-interface model for liquid-vapor system and employing the numerical string method, we study the critical nuclei involved in the prewetting transitions on curved substrates. We first introduce three distinct kinds of critical nuclei, namely, the disklike, bandlike, and la ... [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 124708 (2009)] published Fri Sep 25, 2009. Vasopressin type 2 receptor (V2R) exhibits mostly important properties for hydroosmotic equilibrium and, to a lesser extent, on vasomotricity. Drugs currently acting on this receptor are analogs of the natural neuropeptide, arginine vasopressin (AVP), and hence are competitive ligands. Peptides that reproduce specific sequences of a given receptor have lately been reported to interfere with its action, and if such molecules arise from regions remote from the binding site they would be anticipated to exhibit noncompetitive antagonism, but this has yet to be shown for V2R. Six peptides reproducing juxtamembranous regions of ...

Nanometer-sized liquid droplets formed at temperatures below the bulk melting point become supercooled as they grow through Ostwald ripening or coalescence and can be exploited to grow nanowires without any catalyst. We used this simple approach to synthesize a number of highly crystalline metal oxide nanowires in a chemical or physical vapor deposition apparatus. Examples of nanowires made in this way include VO(2), V(2)O(5), RuO(2), MoO(2), MoO(3), and Fe(3)O(4), some of which have not been previously reported. Direct evidence of this new mechanism of nanowire growth is found from in situ 2-dimensional GISAXS (grazin...

Background:
Nocturnal enuresis is an important problem among young children living in Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible differences in the prevalence of enuresis between children in boarding school and daytime school and the association of enuresis with sociodemographic factors.
Methods:
This was a cross-sectional survey. A total of 562 self-administered questionnaires were distrubuted to parents from two different types of schools. One of them was a day-time school and the other was a boarding school. To describe enuresis the ICD-10 definition of at least one wet night per month for three con...
