Please read this from Scott Dagostino, whose writing makes me admire the way his mind works. Creating a Healthier Future through Prevention of Child Maltreatment
Excellent panel presentation on effects of and strategies to prevent child maltreatment. – Impulsiveness in youth is not a criminal offence, although if it reaches into the realm of delinquency it can quickly become so. Researchers in the US are using functional magnetic resonance imaging to see whether the brains of young offenders differ in some behavioural way from those of non-criminals. Seemingly, they do in terms of the communication between regions associated with motor control and self control.
I asked lead researcher Benjamin Shannon of WUSTL to explain the findings.
“We scanned 107 incarcerated juveniles, between the ages of 14-18,” he told me. “We then compared the results i...

By Mark A. CalabriaI wasn’t in the mood Friday to celebrate the 73rd birthday of the federal minimum wage, created under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Looking at youth unemployment numbers can be a little depressing. Those figures should, however, sober up anyone who is still drunk under the spell of thinking the minimum wage has no impact on unemployment.
The chart above shows the increase in unemployment overall (right axis) and the unemployment rate for workers age 16 to 19 (left axis). The difference between these two numbers usually runs about 10 percent, even in good times. Notice that when t...

I turned 30 last month. While I may not be shouting my age from the rooftops, I feel as young and fresh-faced as I did when I turned 20. Twenty bucks says I could outrun any 18-year-old who dares to challenge me. Yet according to a new study (which, in a bit of morbid-irony, was conducted by a funeral home), most women are already drafting their bucket list when they hit the Big Three-Oh. Meanwhile, most men only begin to feel the mileage on their meter at retirement age. That’s a huge gender gap, and a blatant example of the stricter standards put upon women by our culture. But why is anyone still paying attention t...
