Men's Looks Matter More Than Women Admit, Study Shows
Even if a guy has a great personality, a woman looking for a date still hopes he’s at least a little cute, a new study suggests. Researchers asked young women (ages 15 to 29) to choose potential dates from a series of photographs and descriptions, while the women’s mothers (ages 37 to 61) were asked to select possible boyfriends for their daughters using the same information. Results showed that a man’s looks influenced both groups of women more strongly than his personality profile. This held true even if a man’s profile was filled with highly desirable personal qualities, such as being respectful,...

There Is Now An App For Sperm Testing
A new device that attaches to a smartphone can detect whether a man’s sperm concentration or motility is abnormal with 98 percent accuracy. Researchers hope the device, which is about the size of a small box of crayons and costs less than $5 to make, can address the need for a rapid and cheap way to detect male infertility. Problems with sperm contribute to infertility in 40 percent to 60 percent of cases where a couple has trouble conceiving, said study leader Hadi Shafiee, a professor of engineering in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Current laboratory methods of...

Men Are More At Risk Of Overeating During Holidays, Study Finds
BOSTON (CBS) – Eating the most at the holiday table is a classic Power-Dad move. When everyone else quits on their second plate, there’s always that one person who grabs a third dish and it’s usually a man. A study conducted by the Cornell Food and Brand Lab has found that men are at risk at overeating, simply because of their ego. “Even if men aren’t thinking about it, eating more than a friend tends to be understood as a demonstration of virility and strength,” said co-author Kevin Kniffin, PhD, via News Medical. This might be the quintessential study that explains men. The experim...

Full STEAM Ahead: Tapping Into Our Full Potential
There’s been tremendous momentum in recent years behind science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and especially around bringing more girls into these traditionally male-dominated fields. The enthusiasm around STEM, and the need to bring underrepresented groups into the fold, reaches from classrooms across the country all the way to the White House. “One of the things that I really strongly believe in is that we need to have more girls interested in math, science and engineering,” said President Obama in 2013. “We’ve got half the population that is way underrepresented in those fields and that means that ...

'Mean girl' meerkats can make twice as much testosterone as males
(Duke University) Testosterone. It's often lauded as the hormone that makes males bigger, bolder, stronger. Now researchers have identified one group of animals, the meerkats of Africa, in which females can produce even more testosterone than males -- the only animals known to have such a pattern. Fatherhood Plummets Testosterone... Maybe.
It's so easy to tie things to hormones. We usually think of it as a woman's thing. Fat after a baby? It's her hormones. Cranky when she's hitting her late 40s? It's her hormones. But what about men? In the July issue of Hormones and Behavior, scientists link a man's sinking testosterone levels during his partner's pregnancy to an increased investment in fatherhood. The study tracked 27 heterosexual couples, measuring everyone's testosterone (men and women) three to four times during the pregnancy. Then they all filled out a survey about their investment, commitment, and satisfaction when the baby turned 3-and-a-half month...

Why Men Are Posting Selfies With This Hand Gesture
A simple hand gesture has taken on a very important meaning across social media over the past month. When people post selfies with their thumbs and pointer fingers connected in a circle, commonly interpreted as a gesture of “OK” ― they’re actually trying to save lives. As part of the #ItsOkayToTalk campaign, these photos are promoting the idea that encouraging conversation about mental health and suicide could reduce the stigma that prevents men from speaking up about their struggles.  This initiative couldn’t be more necessary: In the U.S., the national suicide rate is th...

Trump Just Totally Ignored Science... Again
