Approaches in Prehospital Sepsis Screening
Discussion In the United States, sepsis is one of the leading causes of death, which requires timely identification and proper treatment (CDC, 2019; Guerra et al., 2020; Polito et al., 2015). Based upon a review of literature conducted from 2014 to 2018, the primary investigators could locate five prehospital EMS screening tools to assist EMS providers in identifying at-risk sepsis patients. The researchers explored how the modified SIRS and qSOFA scoring systems were used in hospital settings in addition to these five prehospital EMS screening tools. COVID-19 Insight: Issue 5, November 2020, CQC
Infection prevention and control in care homes Effective infection prevention and control (IPC) is essential to protect people from acquiring COVID-19. Providers need to make sure they are taking action to minimise the risk of cross-infection. During August 2020, we carried out a special programme of IPC inspections in 301 care homes selected as potential examples of where IPC was being done well. We have also reviewed IPC in 139 ' risked-based ' inspections between 1 August and 4 September, which were carried out in response to concerns about safety and quality. During these inspections, we reviewed how well staff and pe...

Red Sox Reportedly Showing Interest In Veteran Starter J.A. Happ
BOSTON (CBS) — The Red Sox need pitching, some more pitching, and even more pitching this offseason. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that the team is on the hunt for some free agent pitching. The Red Sox are one of the many teams to show interest in veteran lefty J.A. Happ, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi. Happ, 38, has been an innings-eater throughout his career, something the Red Sox could desperately use going forward. He’s also pretty good at Fenway Park, as Morosi noted Monday: Sources: #RedSox showing interest in J.A. Happ, and perhaps we should have seen this coming: Happ, 38, has thrown m...

South Africa: Release of First National TB Prevalence Survey Should Not Be Delayed Any Longer
[spotlight] The most recent World Health Organization (WHO) World Tuberculosis Report estimates that in 2018, 301 000 people fell ill with TB in South Africa. The report also indicates that the real number may lie anywhere between 215 000 and 400 000 - an astonishingly wide margin. These wide margins illustrate one of the most concerning aspects of the TB epidemic in South Africa - we don't really know how many people get sick with the often deadly disease.

To even pose the question can seem insensitive to those who have suffered, or are suffering, acutely. Still, while the costs of trauma are well-documented, less consideration has been given to the counterintuitive possibility that trauma might contribute positively to our wellbeing in particular ways. And given that nearly all of us will experience traumatic ...

“ Population Density Linked to COVID-19 Spread in India ”
Mumbai, India. Credit: Sthitaprajna Jena (CC BY-SA 2.0). By Sanjeet BagcchiNEW DELHI, Jul 8 2020 (IPS) Indian health experts say the findings of a US study — which suggest that population density is unrelated to COVID-19 infection rates — to be completely contradictory to their experience of dealing with the pandemic in India, a country with 1.3 billion people. Shima Hamidi, lead author of the study, published June in the Journal of the American Planning Association, claimed in a press statement that “the fact that [urban] density is unrelated to confirmed virus infection rates and inversely related to confirmed COV...
