Nerve Injury, Types and Recovery
The anatomy and structure of any nerve is complex. A nerve is a bundle of axons that are grouped into fascicles. Nerves provide a pathway for impulses to be transmitted along each of the axons to the limbs and organs. A cross section of the nerve is shown in figure 1a. The epineurium is a thick connective tissue layer that covers and protects the nerve. The perineurium is a sheath that covers the fascicles and the endoneurium surrounds each axon. The myelin sheath acts as insulation cover that protects the neuron. The myelin sheath also allows the signal to move faster along the axon (Figure 1b). Injury to the axon may b...

One Genius Way To Buy New Clothes Without Overstuffing Your Closet
This article is part of HuffPost’s “Reclaim” campaign, an ongoing project spotlighting the world’s waste crisis and how we can begin to solve it. When you buy a new sweater, do you try to get rid of something old in your closet to make room for it? What if you got a little cash reward each time you did this? That’s the idea behind clothing startup Aeon Row. Launched in July, the company offers a line of no-nonsense women’s clothes ― and for every item purchased, it encourages customers to send back an old piece (no matter where it came from) to be recycled and turne...

Hoboken Train Crash Stirs Asbestos Concerns
High asbestos levels and extensive debris delayed the federal investigation of the Hoboken train crash in New Jersey for more than a week, officials said. Although officials reopened the majority of the rails at the Hoboken terminal this week, efforts to completely clean the century-old terminal will take even longer. The Sept. 29 crash killed 34-year-old Fabiola Bittar de Kroon and injured more than a hundred passengers and others waiting at the station. De Kroon was standing on the platform at the Hoboken train station when falling debris struck her, authorities said. The debris from the crash immediately became a con...

BERLIN (AP) — One person is still missing after an explosion at chemical firm BASF's plant in the southwestern German city of Ludwigshafen that left at least two people dead, the company said Tuesday. The fire at a river harbor in the sprawling facility was extinguished on Monday night, about 10 hours after the explosion, BASF said. As of Tuesday morning, one person was still missing. Be A Fanatic About Your Running Gait And Heal Your Plantar Fasciitis
I Felt Her Pain During the August 2016 Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultra, I slowed down to make sure a limping fellow runner was OK. It was a few hours after the 7 pm start. My headlamp shined on her face and hers on mine. She had a scrape and a bruise below her left eye. She had fallen on the trail after tripping on a tree root. But she was limping because she was suffering painful plantar fasciitis (PF). I empathized with her. I felt her pain. I shared my story of my bout with PF. I told her about my unsuccessful attempts to heal my PF. I shared how I finally overcame my painfully annoying and somewhat disabling PF in my right...

The 'Weird Childhood Fears' Hashtag Will Haunt You Even As An Adult
We’re all afraid of something: heights, the ocean, clowns. But when we’re little, those fears ― whether big, small or in some cases, totally weird ― feel so much more debilitating. Whether it was monsters under the bed or falling through a sidewalk grate, the sometimes irrational but very real fears that come with being a kid are equal parts hilarious and universal in retrospect. Perhaps that relatable nature is what prompted the trending #WeirdChildhoodFears hashtag, which has inspired users to share their deepest, darkest childhood scaries. Check out some of our favorites below, and take solace in th...

The Netherlands Orders All Asbestos Roofs Removed by 2024
Although the Netherlands banned asbestos 22 years ago, officials continue eliminating the toxic mineral from the country’s infrastructure, most recently ordering all asbestos roofing be removed by Jan. 1, 2024. The removal only applies to exterior asbestos-containing materials such as corrugated sheets and slate roofing. It does not apply to interior asbestos roof boards and roof insulation. “The ban on [asbestos] roofing is a start,” David de Vreede, a technical advisor for the Dutch group Committee for Asbestos Victims, told Asbestos.com. “The goal is no asbestos in the country, but that will take a long time.”...

How Innovative Ideas Arise
This article was originally published on JamesClear.com. FOOTNOTES Information for this story was collected from Thomas Thwaites' personal website, The Toaster Project, and from his TED Talk titled, "How I built a toaster from scratch." If you're curious, I believe the closest living reptile ancestor to birds is the crocodile. You sort of imagine how reptile scales interlink and lay over one another in a similar fashion as bird feathers. I first read about The Toaster Project in Adapt by Tim Harford. He also discusses the interconnectedness of our modern world. It's a good read if you're interested in the idea of applyin...

State of Emergency as Thousands Remain Displaced by Southern Floods
ALBANY, La. (AP) — The smell of muddy water hung heavy in the air as people began sorting through waterlogged belongings and ripping out carpets Wednesday in flood-wracked southern Louisiana, which now faces a long-term challenge of how to house thousands of displaced people. Even as the water receded in some areas, it was rising in other communities downstream, sending people fleeing to shelters. Officials painted a stark picture of the crisis: at least 40,000 homes damaged and 11 people killed in some of the worst flooding in Louisiana history. More than 30,000 people have been rescued since Friday. Amid scattered repo...
