Watching Cooking Shows Could Lead To Weight Gain
Your TV may be wreaking havoc on your diet. Watching any old show on the tube while simultaneously snacking can contribute to extra poundage, and new research suggests that food shows in particular (looking at you, Paula Deen) can have an effect, too. A study published in the journal Appetite found that viewers who watch cooking shows for recipe instruction or inspiration are more at risk than those who watch with no intention to cook the meals at home (as well as those who do not watch at all). To conduct the study, researchers asked 501 women, aged 20 to 35, about the sources they used to get information about new foods...

Yoga at Local Shops Builds Business and Community
The studio is no longer the only place to find yoga in your city. Yoga is expanding into offices, parks, and even local shops. Lululemon and Athleta were among the first stores to jump on in-store yoga events, and it makes sense: yoga and fitness enthusiasts flock to a store for a class, and are surrounded by the lovely goodies around them in the shop. Even if a participant doesn't buy something at the event, they will have a positive experience associated with the business. This trend is moving beyond just attracting new customers to fitness wear stores. In New York City, yoga is being offered during off hours in local sh...

9 Ways To Cope With Seasonal Affective Disorder
By Alex Orlov for Life by DailyBurn Do dark, chilly days make your mood cloud over this time each year? You're not alone: Roughly 10 to 20 percent of Americans report feeling tired or sad when there are fewer hours of daylight in the winter months. With bone-chilling temperatures and blustery winds, it's easy to give in to laziness and snooze just a little longer instead of dragging yourself to that early Spinning class -- or, make a date with Netflix instead of bundling up and getting dinner with friends. While many people can still function even if they're feeling a bit melancholy, for some, winter brings a clinical fo...

Amy Poehler Struggles With Sleep Just Like The Rest Of Us
You'd think the juggling act of raising two young sons, producing, acting and sometimes directing the final season of "Parks and Recreation," hosting the 2013 and 2014 Golden Globes and maintaining her besties status with Seth Meyers and Tiny Fey would be tiring enough. But actress Amy Poehler doesn't curl into bed at night and fall asleep immediately out of pure exhaustion. In her recently released memoir Yes Please, Poehler hilariously chronicles major events in her life with wisdom and ease -- including her early Chicago improv days, kicking ass as a waitress, getting hired for "Saturday Night Live" at age 30, her marr...

Stick to Foodstagramming: Poachers May Be Following Your Safari Pictures
You might want to limit your Instagram activity to your brunch excursions. It turns out that geotagging the endangered rhinoceri you saw on Safari on has far darker connotations than letting your social media following know where you got that breakfast burrito. A photograph tweeted by Eleni de Wet, a branding and marketing company owner in South Africa, suggests that geotagged photos are leading poachers directly to their prey: Geotagged safari photos could lead poachers right to endangered rhinos bit.ly/1kNXZks http://t.co/vNZKtYIDep— Adam Pasick (@Adampasick) May 05, 2014 While this image has only recently been mak...

Second opinion gives Tim a second chance for motility health
Tim’s first few weeks of life were hard, on both him and his parents. Born with various medical concerns, including a lack of the sucking and swallowing reflex—the instinctual way babies know how to suck and swallow milk—he had a hard time getting all the nutrients he needed. To help him thrive he was fitted with a gastric feeding tube (G-tube) that delivered formula directly to his stomach. But even with his tube, Tim still had problems with severe reflux. It puzzled his local doctors and pained his parents who were at a loss as to how they could comfort their son. “It’s heartbreaking to have a child...
