Mental Health Respite Facilities Are Filling Care Gaps in Over a Dozen States
Respite facilities are providing safe places to stay for people in a mental health crisis but not needing medical care. These facilities connect patients with trained peers for their care, keeping them out of already full healthcare facilities. Data showing their effectiveness is limited, though experts are seeing positive effects. Respite facilities are especially important in rural locations as suicide rates and emergency room visits from self-harm are higher in rural areas than urban ones.
