A farewell to the x-ray –generating particle accelerator that was my father’s baby
Last week technicians at Argonne National Laboratory began to disassemble a particle accelerator known as the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a ring 1.1 kilometers around that since 1995 has shone as one of the world’s brightest sources of x-rays. It’s hardly the end for the facility, which annually serves nearly 6000 scientists from myriad fields. Within a year, workers will replace the electron accelerator with a new one that will boost the intensity of the APS’s output x-ray beams by a factor of 500. A major scientific facility will be rejuvenated. That’s not unusual. For me personally, however, the dis...

New resource underscores the importance of small molecule medicines
A small molecule medicine is what most people think of when they imagine a medicine. These medicines typically come in the form of a tablet or capsule and are usually taken by mouth. These medicines play essential roles in the treatment of different diseases and are indispensable in providing patients, caregivers and health care providers with the tools necessary to achieve improved health outcomes. Despite the important advantages small molecule medicines offer in the treatment of many illnesses, government price setting provisions in the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) could result in fewer of these medicin...

How the Rise of Timor-Leste ’s Aquaculture Sector Is a Blueprint for Other Small Island Nations
Fish farmers harvest genetically improved farmed tilapia. Credit: Shandy SantosBy Jharendu PantPENANG, Malaysia, May 3 2023 (IPS) For Timor-Leste, as with most other islands in the Pacific, fortunes are to be found in fish – an equity food available to all regardless of status. Nevertheless, the island is highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, hampering domestic food production and contributing to Timor-Leste’s ranking of 110th out of 121 countries for malnutrition. Meanwhile, the country is highly dependent on imported foods – including aquatic foods. But a national strategy to prioritise the sustainable ...

Dredged lake sediment could nourish new crops
Every year, farmers fertilize their crops with nitrogen and phosphorus to ensure a good harvest. And every year some of that fertilizer inevitably makes its way into ponds and lakes, where it can trigger ecosystem-wrecking algal blooms. According to a new study published last month in Science of the Total Environment , though, there may be a relatively simple way to close the loop on this leaky system: using the nutrient-rich lake sediments as fertilizer . “We’d be wise as a society to recycle these nutrients,” says University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign soil scientist Andrew Margenot, who was not i...
