‘I thought – who will remember me?’: the man who fathered 200 children
Worried he ’d never have a family, Louis became a prolific sperm donor, hoping that his children would one day track him down. And then they didLouis used to cycle to the sperm bank, his deposit in a bag. He needed to make it in good time to preserve the contents of each specimen jar, which he placed in a warmed cabinet when he arrived. In the evenings, when men arrived after work, there would sometimes be social events at the sperm bank, with tea and cake. Other sperm banks – he was a regular donor at three – were more perfunctory, with small rooms for donations and the usual magazines.Like most of the donors, Louis...

Prof Kneebone is the right man for the job | Brief letters
Posy Simmonds | Universal credit | Village for sale | Surgical education | Free Telegraph | Amazing wordsYour article (Review, 26 October) says Posy Simmonds “has been delighting readers with her exquisitely drawn comic strips and novels since the 1970s, when she began to lampoon the Guardian-reading bourgeoisie in a long-running comic strip that grew into Mrs Weber’s Diary”. Disruption Is on the Horizon, Are You Ready?
Conclusion As I end this issue of EMSOLOGY, I glimpse into our future and see that the EMS and healthcare landscape looks massively different: The traditions, methods and practices of today are memorialized and honored by providers and forgotten by our patients of tomorrow; Technology reduces service demand and automates supply side service delivery; Patient behaviors are always aligned with the most effective, efficient and, therefore, the most appropriate preventive and reactive care pathway; Medicine is custom-delivered to the patient; Going out of the home to receive care is no longer needed; and The capacity bubble c...

Vaginal hysterectomy for prolapse – success! – Sue ’ s story
I had a vaginal hysterectomy for prolapse. As a fit and active 62 year old I was horrified to discover I had a prolapsed bowel and even more horrified to be referred to an incontinence clinic! I was not, and thankfully never had been incontinent. I followed a pelvic floor exercise programme at home which really helped and went to see a gynaecologist who discovered I also had a prolapsed womb and slight prolapsed bladder; he recommended a vaginal hysterectomy and other internal procedures to lift and suture the bowel and bladder prolapses and also to do a perineum repair. It was all due to childbirth and the menopause ̵...

A Third of Teenagers Don ’t Read Books for Pleasure Anymore
A third of U.S. teenagers haven’t read a book for pleasure in at least a year, according to a new survey from the American Psychological Association (APA). And it’s not because they’re too busy watching TV. The research, published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture, points to the continuing dominance of digital media among teenagers. Teen use of traditional media — such as books, magazines and television — has dropped off, while time spent texting, scrolling through social media and using other forms of digital media continues to increase, the survey says. To reach their conclu...

‘ Snapchat Dysmorphia ’ : Selfies, Photo Filters Driving People To Plastic Surgery, Doctors Say
BOSTON (CBS News) — Plastic surgeons are sounding the alarm on a disturbing trend that’s emerged with the growing popularity of social media: patients seeking cosmetic surgery to resemble how they see themselves in Snapchat filters. The phenomenon, dubbed “Snapchat dysmorphia,” has people requesting fuller lips, bigger eyes, or a thinner nose in order to look like the filtered or photo-edited versions of themselves. “This is an alarming trend because those filtered selfies often present an unattainable look and are blurring the line of reality and fantasy for these patients,” researchers...

A new reality for beauty standards: How selfies and filters affect body image
(Boston Medical Center) With the spread of photo-editing technology through applications like Snapchat and Facetune, the level of physical 'perfection' previously seen only on celebrity or beauty magazines is now all over social media. As these images become the norm, people's perceptions of beauty worldwide are changing, which can take a toll on a person's self-esteem and can trigger body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), argue Boston Medical Center (BMC) researchers in a JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Viewpoint.
