Inflammatory Causes of Dysphagia in Children
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) are the most common inflammatory causes of pediatric dysphagia, but several other less prevalent conditions should be considered. These conditions can affect one or several aspects of the swallowing process. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia may be an early symptom. Esophagoscopy and instrumental swallow studies are often needed to determine the underlying diagnosis and best treatment plan. In some inflammatory conditions dysphagia can portend a worse outcome and need for more aggressive treatment of the underlying condition. Consultations with speech...

Rearing a child with a language disorder: parents experiences with speech and language therapy services in 10 countries
ConclusionsAcross countries, parents encounter similar experiences. The major obstacles identified by parents lead to the perception of delay in obtaining access to services. Identifying the services that children required was the first hurdle, even before getting a referral to them. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

Learning to produce and transcribe cardinal vowels: speech and language therapy students' perception of task difficulty
Clin Linguist Phon. 2024 Apr 16:1-19. doi: 10.1080/02699206.2024.2336252. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLearning vowel transcription skills is crucial to function as a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). However, vowel transcription is commonly regarded as particularly difficult and therefore often avoided. Despite the importance of accurate transcriptions, little is known about all the factors that influence the process of learning vowel transcription, which usually includes the learning of the Cardinal Vowel (CV) system. There are only a few studies that investigate how CVs are learnt and what factors lead to successful...

Spelling Facilitates Reading: A Tutorial on the Spell-to-Read Approach
CONCLUSIONS: Learning to spell is essential for learning to read. Accordingly, this tutorial aims to elucidate how to (a) assess and identify phases of spelling development and (b) teach spelling to facilitate reading through a listening-first approach.PMID:38625104 | DOI:10.1044/2024_LSHSS-23-00137 (Source: Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools)

A First Estimate of the Prevalence of Developmental Language Disorder in Mexico: A Retrospective Study
Semin Speech Lang. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1055/s-0044-1785686. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis was a retrospective study that aimed to provide a first estimate of the prevalence of developmental language disorder (DLD) in Mexico, where there is currently a lack of epidemiological data on this disorder. Children aged 4;0 to 6;11 years in the cities of Mexico, Queretaro, and Monterrey were classified into two groups: those with DLD (N = 46) and those with typical language development (N = 497). The diagnosis of DLD was based on standardized norm-referenced assessment and language sample analyses. Children with other disabil...

Poststroke Communication Ability Predicts Patient-Informant Discrepancies in Reported Activities and Participation
DISCUSSION: These findings highlight the importance of measuring participation by PROM. The PWA's experience of participation is not related to their level of language impairment and is predictably different from their care partners' perspective. As others have also reported, "mild" aphasia is not so mild to the PWA. Similarly, "severe" may not be so severe to the PWA. Further research is needed to connect these findings with counseling and caregiver education. Research on response processes (e.g., response shift) is also warranted.PMID:38625105 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00322 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Gesture's Role in the Communication of Adults With Different Types of Aphasia
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our results provide evidence for a compensatory role of gesture in aphasia communication. Adults with Broca's aphasia, who showed the greatest speech production difficulties, also relied most on gesture, and this pattern was particularly pronounced in the third-person narrative context.PMID:38625101 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00046 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

The Association Between Stuttering Burden and Psychosocial Aspects of Life in Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Our results emphasize the need to be attentive to the diverse experiences and needs of PWS, rather than treating them as a homogeneous group. Our findings also stress the importance of personalized therapeutic strategies for individuals with stuttering, considering all aspects that could influence their stuttering burden. People with high-burden stuttering might, for example, have a higher need for psychological therapy to reduce stuttering-related anxiety. People with less emotional reactions but severe speech distortions may also have a moderate to high burden, but they may have a higher need for speech tech...

Self-Rated Confidence in Vocal Emotion Recognition Ability: The Role of Gender
CONCLUSIONS: In spite of varying interpretations of gender in each independent rating (ERA and SRC), our results suggest that both men and women decoders were accurate in their metacognition regarding voice emotion recognition. Further research is needed to study how individuals of both genders use metacognitive knowledge in their emotional recognition and whether and how such knowledge contributes to effective social communication.PMID:38625128 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00373 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

The prevalence of relational basic concepts on core vocabulary lists for AAC: is frequency enough?
We examined the overlap of these words on nine core vocabulary lists. We found that most concepts were not represented on any core lists. Additionally, there was relatively little overlap of RBCs between the core lists. These findings suggest that vocabulary selection resources created using exclusively a core vocabulary approach may have limited utility for identifying many concepts that preschool and early elementary students are expected to know and use. Implications for AAC research and practice are discussed with emphasis on the need for further consideration of RBCs within vocabulary selection practice and the field ...

The confidence and competence of speech language pathologists in augmentative and alternative communication: a scoping review
Augment Altern Commun. 2024 Apr 15:1-14. doi: 10.1080/07434618.2024.2333383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAugmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a core component of speech pathology practice. However, international literature has highlighted that speech language pathologists (SLPs) may not feel confident or competent in this area. Confidence and competence are critical factors in therapy as they can impact the quality-of-service provision. The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate the confidence/competence of SLPs in AAC. A systematic scoping search was conducted using four databases to identify r...
