New deadly strain of bird flu may have emerged
“Experts are concerned about the spread of a new strain of bird flu that has already killed one woman in China,” BBC News reports. The new strain, which has evolved from an existing bird flu virus called H10N8, has infected two people in China. A case report in The Lancet medical journal warns that potential for a new pandemic “should not be underestimated”. Their genetic tests of the strain suggests it has adapted to infect humans more easily.  That said, experts suggest there is currently no cause for alarm. There is no evidence that the new strain can pass between humans. Also, the woman who died of the ne...

'Painless' flu vaccine skin patch shows promise
Conclusion Further testing in larger trials needs to be done to be sure these initial results hold true and that the vaccine patch is safe and effective. The 2018 Flu Season Might Finally Be Leveling Off
(NEW YORK) — This nasty flu season, which has been worsening for months, may finally be leveling off. Health officials on Friday said about 1 of every 13 visits to the doctor last week was for fever, cough and other symptoms of the flu. That’s no reason for health officials to celebrate yet: That level is among the highest in a decade. But it’s no worse than last week, and flu activity had been increasing each week since November. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report said the number of states reporting heavy flu patient traffic also held steady at 43. “I thought I was going to die,...

The Flu Killed 7 Children Last Week – but It’s Hitting Baby Boomers Even Harder
This year’s severe flu season brought at least seven more pediatric deaths in the past week – bringing the total to 37 so far this season. Baby Boomers, however, are among the hardest hit, with an unusually high rate of hospitalizations this year, according to CDC officials. “Baby Boomers have higher rates [of hospitalization] than their grandchildren right now,” CDC Influenza Division Director Dr. Dan Jernigan said during a call with reporters Friday. During a typical flu season, elderly adults see the highest rate of hospitalizations, followed by young children. But this year, Jernigan said, adult...
