Narcolepsy with cataplexy in a child with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Case Report.
We report an 8-year-old boy diagnosed with both CMT1 and narcolepsy, which were not reported simultaneously presenting in one person. The boy presented with a history of increased suddenly falling frequency and excessive daytime sleepiness for 3 months. CMT1 was diagnosed by electrophysiology and genetic testing. Narcolepsy had not been diagnosed until the frequently falling caused by sudden and transient episodes of legs weakness triggered by emotion was found. Multiple sleep latency test showed multiple sleep onset REM periods with reduced sleep latency. When CMT1 and narcolepsy were coexist in an individual, the latter ...

The Comorbidity of Focal Epilepsy and Narcolepsy Type 1 - Two Case Reports.
Authors: Klobucnikova K, Siarnik P, Muchova I, Štofko J, Kollar B Abstract The aim of this study is to remind the possibility of co-occurrence of epilepsy and narcolepsy. In the first case report, narcolepsy type 1 was diagnosed in 29-year-old female. After one year of the treatment with modafinil a new episodes of automatic behavior appeared. Hippocampal but not amygdalar volume loss in narcolepsy with cataplexy.
Authors: Nemcova V, Krasensky J, Kemlink D, Petrovicky P, Vaneckova M, Seidl Z, Rulseh A, Buskova J, Susta M, Sonka K Abstract OBJECTIVE: Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) and narcolepsy without cataplexy (NwoC) are lifelong neurological disorders characterized primarily by excessive daytime sleepiness. Emotional events such as laughter are a trigger of cataplexy in NC. METHODS: We compared the volumes of key limbic structures, the amygdala and hippocampus, in 53 NC, 23 NwoC and 37 control subjects. MRI volumetry was performed in FreeSurfer (FS) and by manual delineation. RESULTS: We found no differences in am...

Narcolepsy with cataplexy and Parkinson's disease. Case Report.
We present the case of an 86 year old female, in whom narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) manifested at 52 years of age. She was treated by an amphetamine-like drug phenmetrazine and tricyclic antidepressants for more than 10 years. Hypokinetic-rigid syndrome manifested at 83 years of age and Parkinson´s disease (PD) was diagnosed. Detailed examination at the age of 86 confirmed the previous diagnosis of NC and the diagnosis of PD. Severe periodic limb movements in sleep, severe sleep apnea, REM sleep behavior disorder and restless legs syndrome, which are frequently comorbid in NC and PD, were revealed. The patient's somnolen...

Antidepressants substantially affect basic REM sleep characteristics in narcolepsy-cataplexy patients.
CONCLUSIONS: NC patients with a history of antidepressant use showed a three-fold higher occurrence of RBD in comparison to antidepressant-naïve patients. PMID: 26707042 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Mood disorders in patients with hypersomnia: comparison of sleep-related breathing disorders versus narcolepsy
CONCLUSION: Compared to NA, our results suggest significantly worse measures of depression and a significantly higher frequency of anxiety in the SBD-EDS population. Measures of anxiety and depression significantly correlated with quality of sleep in both groups.PMID:34713691
