The European Narcolepsy Network (EU ‐NN) database
Summary Narcolepsy with cataplexy is a rare disease with an estimated prevalence of 0.02% in European populations. Narcolepsy shares many features of rare disorders, in particular the lack of awareness of the disease with serious consequences for healthcare supply. Similar to other rare diseases, only a few European countries have registered narcolepsy cases in databases of the International Classification of Diseases or in registries of the European health authorities. A promising approach to identify disease‐specific adverse health effects and needs in healthcare delivery in the field of rare diseases is to establish a...

Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybates oral solution for cataplexy or excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2023 Apr 15. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2023.2204187. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Lower-sodium oxybate (LXB) is a novel formulation that is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in adult patients and children ≥ 7 years with narcolepsy. LXB contains 92 percent less sodium than sodium oxybate (SXB), which adds 550-1640 mg of sodium/day at usual doses of 3-9 grams per day. The FDA has declared LXB to be clinically superior to SXB due to greater safety by reducing the chronic sodium load. Narcolepsy patients have hi...

FIGHTING THE FLU Flu season comes every year, yet not enough people get vaccinated with the widely available flu shot. This is a particular problem in the medical field. "I think the biggest hurdle for EMS professionals is having an ˜invincible' mindset,"says Director of Marketing Communications for ProTransport-1 Carly Clements. "In the simplest form, our crews take care of people for a living, so often they might forget that they themselves need protecting from illness. ProTransport-1, a medical transport company serving the San Francisco, Sacramento and surrounding valley areas of central California, dec...

Comparison of the Cepheid Xpert Xpress Flu/RSV Assay to in-house Flu/RSV triplex real-time RT-PCR for rapid molecular detection of Influenza A, Influenza B and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in respiratory specimens.
This study compared the performance of the commercially available Xpert Xpress Flu/RSV assay to an in-house FluAB/RSV triplex real-time RT-PCR assay for the detection of influenza A/B viruses and respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) from both nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) and nasopharyngeal flocked swab (NPS). A total of 20 external quality assurance (EQA) samples and 172 clinical respiratory samples were tested prospectively using both the Xpert Xpress Flu/RSV assay and the in-house FluAB/RSV triplex assay. For the EQA samples, concordance rate was 100 % when tested with both assays. For clinical samples, there was 100 %...
