Stage of Gestation at Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus Infection of Pregnant Swine Impacts Maternal Immunity and Lactogenic Immune Protection of Neonatal Suckling Piglets
In this study, we infected pregnant first parity gilts in their first, second and third trimesters of gestation with PEDV to determine the impact of stage of gestation on generation of maternal B-cell immunity, the gut-MG-sIgA axis and lactogenic immune protection in PEDV challenged piglets. Our goal was to identify innate and adaptive immune factors during pregnancy that influence lymphocyte trafficking, in addition to immune correlates of lactogenic immune protection in neonatal suckling piglets. Understanding the impact of stage of gestation at PEDV infection or exposure on maternal immunity will allow more precise mate...

Ten bisphenol analogs were abundantly found in swine and bovine urines collected from two Chinese farms: concentration profiles and risk evaluation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2022 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s11356-022-23089-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBisphenol analogs (BPs) in livestock urine are important biomarkers to reflect the potential contaminants in food products derived from these animals. Nevertheless, little research has been done on their occurrence in farm animal urine. This work investigated ten BPs in swine and bovine urines collected from two Chinese farms. Results showed that all of these ten BPs were frequently detected in swine and bovine urines. The total mean concentration of the ten BPs (ΣBPs) in sow urines was 59.7 ng/mL, which was significant...

Historical and contemporary aspects of maternal immunity in swine.
Abstract Maternal immunity plays a pivotal role in swine health and production because piglets are born agammaglobulinemic and with limited cell-mediated immunity, i.e. few peripheral lymphoid cells, immature lymphoid tissues, and no effector and memory T-lymphocytes. Swine do not become fully immunologically competent until about 4 weeks of age, which means that their compromised ability to respond to infectious agents during the first month of life must be supplemented by maternal immune components: (1) circulating antibodies derived from colostrum; (2) mucosal antibodies from colostrum and milk; and (3) immune ...

Development of dipstick enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for on-site sero-diagnosis of Japanese encephalitis in swine.
Abstract Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an important viral zoonotic disease in Asia, especially in rural and suburban areas where rice cultivation and pig farming coexist. Pigs serve as a suitable sentinel model, the surveillance of which could predict a potential JE outbreak in human population in the immediate vicinity. However, existing diagnostics like ELISA and VNT require sophisticated laboratory facilities which are more often not available in field conditions. In the present study, we aimed at developing recombinant non-structural (NS1) protein-based dipstick IgG ELISA as an on-site assay for sero-diagnosis...

L-Glutamate nutrition and metabolism in swine.
Abstract L-Glutamate (Glu) has traditionally not been considered as a nutrient needed in diets for humans and other animals (including swine) due to the unsubstantiated assumption that animals can synthesize sufficient amounts of Glu to meet their needs. The lack of knowledge about Glu nutrition has contributed to suboptimal efficiency of global livestock production. Over the past 25 years, there has been growing interest in Glu metabolism in the pig, which is an agriculturally important species and also a useful model for studying human biology. Because of analytical advances in its analysis, Glu is now known to...

Cryopreservation of swine colostrum-derived cells.
Abstract Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been demonstrated to possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and are of interest in biotechnologies that will require cryopreservation. Recently, MSC-like cells were isolated from colostrum and milk. We used an interrupted slow freezing procedure to examine cryoinjury incurred during slow cooling and rapid cooling of MSC-like cells from swine colostrum. Cells were loaded with either dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO) or glycerol, cooled to a nucleation temperature, ice-nucleated, and further cooled at 1 °C/min. At several temperatures along the cooling path,...

Viruses, Vol. 14, Pages 734: Efficacy of Liming Forest Soil in the Context of African Swine Fever Virus
In conclusion, the high efficacy and suitability of all tested lime products against both viruses and in the presence of high organic load in forest soil can be confirmed and will help to control ASF spread.

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 4153: Determination of Free Amino Acids in Milk, Colostrum and Plasma of Swine via Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescence and UV Detection
evisi Fiori Amino acids are ubiquitous components of mammalian milk and greatly contribute to its nutritional value. The compositional analysis of free amino acids is poorly reported in the literature even though their determination in the biological fluids of livestock animals is necessary to establish possible nutritional interventions. In the present study, the free amino acid profiles in mature swine milk, colostrum and plasma were assessed using a targeted metabolomics approach. In particular, 20 amino acids were identified and quantified via two alternative and complementary reversed-phase HPLC methods, involv...

A multilevel study of the environmental determinants of swine ascariasis in England.
In conclusion, our findings suggest that ascariasis can be influenced by a complex network of environmental factors. Future research needs to acknowledge these intermingled relationships to guide the development and application of control measures by the industry.

Randomised Controlled Trial on Prophylaxis of Mastitis-Metritis-Agalactia Syndrome in Swine using Caulophyllum Logoplex and Lachesis Logoplex
CONCLUSIONS: Prophylaxis with the homeopathic remedies Caulophyllum Logoplex and Lachesis Logoplex in the present study showed neither an improvement in MMA prevention nor an improvement in health parameters or behavioural traits in the present herd of sows.PMID:37652040 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1770725

Don ’t Blame China. The Next Pandemic Could Come from Anywhere
The northern side of Chatuchak Weekend Market feels a bit like Noah has hit hard times and decided to offload the entire contents of his Ark. In wooden cages, bright-plumed fighting cocks squawk and peck. Around the corner are snakes in plastic takeout containers, prices scrawled on them in sharpie. Hairless squirrel kits snooze in a pile as a meerkat and giant iguana gaze on. A pygmy monkey leaps about with a furious scowl, perhaps indignant at the 30,000 baht ($950) price tag fixed to his enclosure. Across the narrow alleyway, a lynx prowls restlessly within its cage. “He’s 250,000 baht [$7,900],” says ...
