Narcolepsy-cataplexy and psychosis: a case study.
CONCLUSION: The coexistence of narcolepsy with psychoses is a rare clinical entity, more frequent in adolescents than in adults. The comorbidity of the two illnesses worsens clinical and therapeutic prognosis and also suggests interesting pathophysiological hypotheses. PMID: 28675258 [PubMed - in process]

The functional vascular anatomy of the swine for research
CONCLUSIONS: Swine are utilized in broad-reaching fields for preclinical research. While many similarities between human and swine vasculature exist, there are important differences to consider when conducting and interpreting research. This review article highlights these differences and presents accompanying images to inform clinicians gaining experience in swine research.PMID:33813971 | DOI:10.1177/1708538121996500

A reproducible swine model of a surgically created saccular thoracic aortic aneurysm.
We report a surgical method for creating a reproducible swine saccular TAA model. We used eight female swine weighing 20-25 kg (LWD; ternary species). All procedures were performed under general anesthesia and involved left thoracotomy. Following aortic cross-clamping, the thoracic aorta was surgically dissected and the media and intima were resected, and the dissection plane was extended by spreading the outer layer for aneurysmal space. Subsequently, only the adventitial layer of the aorta was sutured. At 2 weeks after these procedures, angiography and computed tomography (CT) were performed. After follow-up imaging, the ...

Safety and Efficacy of an Aortic Arch Stent Graft with Window-Shaped Fenestration for Supra-Aortic Arch Vessels: an Experimental Study in Swine.
CONCLUSION: The procedure with the FASG-W was able to be performed safely in a relatively short procedure time and involved an easy technique. The FASG-W was found to be safe and convenient for use in this preclinical study of swine. PMID: 28382077 [PubMed - in process]

Safety and efficacy of a novel, fenestrated aortic arch stent graft with a preloaded catheter for supraaortic arch vessels: an experimental study in Swine.
Abstract Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) shows limitations in cases in which the aortic pathology involves the aortic arch. The study aims were to test a fenestrated aortic arch stent graft (FASG) with a preloaded catheter for the supraaortic arch vessels and to perform a preclinical study in swine to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this device. Six FASGs with 1 preloaded catheter and 5 FASGs with 2 preloaded catheters were advanced through the iliac artery in 11 swines. The presence of endoleaks and the patency and deformity of the grafts were examined with computed tomography (CT) at 4 weeks post...

Effect of Intracoronary Metformin on Myocardial Infarct Size in Swine.
CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to rodent hearts, postconditioning with high-dose metformin administered immediately before reperfusion does not reduce IS or improve LV function 7 days after myocardial infarction in swine. These results reinforce the importance of rigorously testing therapies in large animal models to facilitate clinical translation of novel cardioprotective therapies. A Quantitative Study of the Dimensional Change of Inferior Vena Cava on Computed Tomography During Acute Hemorrhage Shock in Swine.
CONCLUSIONS: IVC shrank early but collapsed late during the acute hemorrhage in swine. The finding of collapsed IVC on CT scans suggested severe hypovolemic shock. Evaluation of the IVC at the CT scans can be an adjunctive test of the hemodynamic status in trauma patients. PMID: 30894039 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Image-guided study of swine anatomy as a tool for urologic surgery research and training.
CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained show similarities with human anatomy, suggesting the viability of the swine model for planning preclinical trials, basic research, refinement in experimental surgery and surgical training for urological procedures. PMID: 33503221 [PubMed - in process]

Device safety assessment of bronchoscopic microwave ablation of normal swine peripheral lung using robotic-assisted bronchoscopy
CONCLUSION: The NEUWAVE FLEX and MONARCH devices were safely used to perform single or multiple RAB MWAs. The preclinical procedural safety profile of RAB MWA supports clinical research of both devices to investigate efficacy in select patients with oligometastatic disease or primary NSCLC.PMID:36944369 | DOI:10.1080/02656736.2023.2187743
