Scientists divided over device that 'remotely detects hepatitis C'
Developers say C-Fast – developed from bomb detection technology – will revolutionise diagnosis of other diseasesThe device the doctor held in his hand was not a contraption you expect to find in a rural hospital near the banks of the Nile. For a start, it was adapted from a bomb detector used by the Egyptian army. Second, it looked like the antenna for a car radio. Third, and most bizarrely, it could – the doctor claimed – remotely detect the presence of liver disease in patients sitting several feet away, within seconds. The antenna was a prototype for a device called C-Fast. If its Egyptian developers are to be be...

Hepatitis C detector promises hope and nothing more | Síle Lane
Wherever people are confronted with serious threats and a lack of solutions there is a potential market in false hopeA new device that supposedly detects diseases remotely is being promoted. According to an excited report earlier this week in the Guardian, about a demonstration of the device in an Egyptian hospital, its developers hope it will first be used to detect swine flu and hepatitis C, and later other diseases. What is being plugged here is hope and nothing more. The device looks like a car radio aerial attached to a handle. It is said to work by detecting a specific frequency emitted by infected liver cells. It is ...

Homeopathic treatment of patients with influenza-like illness during the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic in India.
CONCLUSIONS: In our sample, the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic in India was characterised by several prominent symptoms and symptom/medicine associations, particularly temperature >38°C + cough + runny nose, associated with Arsenicum album. Future studies should collect additional keynote prescribing symptoms that influence the choice of homeopathic medicine. PMID: 23870378 [PubMed - in process]

In silico analysis to compare the effectiveness of assorted drugs prescribed for swine flu in diverse medicine systems
Kalpana Raja, Archana Prabahar, Suganya Selvakumar, TK RajaIndian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences 2014 76(1):10-18The genome of the virus H1N1 2009 consists of eight segments but maximum number of mutations occurs at segments 1 and 4, coding for PB2 subunit of hemagglutinin. Comparatively less number of mutations occur at segment 6, coding for neuraminidase. Two antiviral drugs, oseltamivir and zanamivir are commonly prescribed for treating H1N1 infection. Alternate medical systems do compete equally; andrographolide in Siddha and gelsemine in Homeopathy. Recent studies confirm the efficacy of eugenol from Tulsi and vit...

Nosodes and Sarcodes
Title: Nosodes and Sarcodes Authors: Sankar, Karthik; Jadhav, Aruna P Abstract: Nosodes and sarcodes are potentized preparations which are prepared according to homeopathic standards. Nosodes are prepared from inactivated diseased products of human, animal or vegetable origin or cultures of micro-organisms. In contrast, the source material for sarcodes comes from a healthy tissue, organ or secretion of humans or animals. As nosodes and sarcodes are prepared from body substance and discharge they have a peculiar affinity with the functions of the body and they are unique. Both nosodes and sarcodes act as prophylactics and...

Complementary medicine use and flu vaccination - A nationally representative survey of US adults
CONCLUSIONS: Complementary medicine users were equally likely to receive an influenza vaccination compared with non-users. Different complementary therapies showed varied associations with vaccination behavior. Further analyses may be needed to distinguish influencing factors among patients' vaccination behavior.PMID:34419302 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.08.017

Kids Who Get Alternative Medicine May Be Less Likely To Get Flu Shot
(Reuters Health) - Children that visit alternative medical practitioners like acupuncturists and chiropractors may be less likely to receive flu shots than their peers, a U.S. study suggests. Roughly 33 percent of kids who saw providers of so-called non-Western medicine for services like acupuncture or homeopathic care got vaccinations for influenza, the analysis of national survey data on about 9,000 kids found. About 35 percent of kids who went to practitioners of what’s known as manipulative and body-based therapies such as chiropractic care or massage got flu vaccinations. In comparison, 43 percent of children wh...

Homeopathic medicines for prevention of influenza and acute respiratory tract infections in children: blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
CONCLUSION: These results suggested that the use of homeopathic medicines minimized the number of flu and acute respiratory infection symptomatic episodes in children, signalizing that the homeopathic prophylactic potential should be investigated in further studies. My Daughter's Mysterious Illness -- And My Own
For TueNight.com by Allison Czarnecki (Photos: Courtesy Allison Czarnecki. Photos from left to right: Allison and her daughter as a baby, Allison's daughter in the hospital getting tests, Allison's daughter now; Photo collage: Helen Jane Hearn/TueNight.com) Exactly one year ago, my teenage daughter got sick. Really sick. One day, out of the blue, she woke up and couldn't get out of bed. Up to this point, my then 14-year-old daughter had been a wildly healthy, state-championship swimmer who played the cello in an honors orchestra, earned straight As in all her classes. She was heavily involved in leadership positions in...

Influenza, influenza-like illness: From theory to practice.
Abstract In France, there are large discrepancies regarding flu between the severe disease described by Health Authorities and the disease that people face, considered as usual and benign. Flu prevention is useful, mainly through vaccination. For a well-established influenza-like illness, both individual measures dedicated to the limitation of the disease propagation and symptomatic treatment are to be initiated. Few clinical data are available regarding the most often used treatments for influenza-like illness (paracetamol, homeopathic and symptomatic treatments). The analysis did not show any decrease in the cha...

Vaccine Hesitancy: Clarifying a Theoretical Framework for an Ambiguous Notion
Conclusion In this paper, we have discussed some of the ambiguities and contradictions of the notion of vaccine hesitancy. We have argued that it is currently more a catchall category than a real concept. This lack of consistence is likely to hamper both research and interventions. Therefore, as a supplement to the previous work carried out by the SAGE working group, we propose grounding the notion of vaccine hesitancy in an explicit theoretical framework that takes some major structural features of contemporary societies into account. We consider VH to be a kind of decision-making process that depends on people’s level ...

Parental Vaccine Hesitancy in Quebec (Canada)
This study aims to contribute to the ongoing reflections on tools and indicators of vaccine hesitancy by providing results of a survey on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs (KAB) of parents in Quebec (Canada). We have compared KAB of parents according to: 1) self-reported vaccination status of their child and 2) hesitation during the vaccination decision. Methods Data were collected through the 2014 Quebec study on vaccination against seasonal influenza and pneumococcal infections, a biennial repeated cross-sectional study in the province of Quebec, Canada. This paper presents the results pertaining to parents’ KAB about ...
