Do statins interfere with the flu vaccine?
Statins are powerful, unusual, and, like El Niño and Tom Cruise, not well understood. Statins have a huge upside. They improve survival after heart attacks and lower the risk of recurrent strokes. They are also the only cholesterol-lowering medications that have been clearly shown to reduce heart attacks and deaths in high-risk patients without heart disease. In addition to reducing cholesterol, statins also lower levels of inflammation in the body. Reducing inflammation probably helps statins to prevent heart attack and stroke. However, evidence is emerging that these statin effects may also have a downside, hindering th...

Statins Could Reduce Effectiveness Of Flu Shot
BOSTON (CBS) – If you’re one of the millions of Americans over 65 who use statins to control your cholesterol, the flu shot may not work as well for you as it does for others. In a study looking at nearly 7,000 seniors, those using statins were found to have a significantly reduced immune response to vaccination, as measured by antibody levels in the blood three weeks later. It’s not clear why this is the case, but if it bears out in future studies, it may be recommended that patients on statins get a high-dose flu vaccine or one with components that boost the immune response.

Interaction of swine organic anion transporting polypeptide 1a2 with tetracycline, macrolide and β-lactam antibiotics.
Abstract Organic anion-transporting polypeptides (human OATPs; animals Oatps; gene symbol SLCO/Slco) are integral membrane proteins that mediate the sodium-independent transport of a wide range of endogenous compounds as well as many xenobiotics. Antibiotics, antidiabetic drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, antifungals, antivirals, antihistamines, antihypertensives, fibrates, statins, cardiac glycosides, immunosuppressants, and anticancer drugs are among the substrates transported by OATPs. Because of the broad substrate specificity, wide tissue distribution and the involvement of drug-drug interaction, human OATPs ha...

The cardioprotection of simvastatin in reperfused swine hearts relates to the inhibition of myocardial edema by modulating aquaporins via the PKA pathway
Abstract: Background and objective: Myocardial edema plays a role in myocardial no-reflow and infarction during ischemia and reperfusion. The effects of statins against no-reflow and infarction may relate to the inhibition of myocardial edema. The current study investigated the role of protein kinase A (PKA) in statin-reduced myocardial edema in reperfused swine hearts. Methods and results: Minipigs were treated with simvastatin (SIM, 2mg/kg), SIM+H-89 (a PKA inhibitor, 1.0μg/kg/min), or H-89 alone 1h before 90-min ischemia and 3-h reperfusion or sham operation. Ischemia or ischemia–reperfusion induced severe myocardial ...

Differential Effects of Atorvastatin on Autophagy in Ischemic and Non-Ischemic Myocardium in Ossabaw Swine with Metabolic Syndrome
Autophagy is a homeostatic mechanism that has been shown to be cardioprotective. In a clinically relevant swine model of metabolic syndrome we found atorvastatin to differentially regulate autophagy signaling, stimulating autophagy in non-ischemic myocardium while partly inhibiting it in chronically ischemic myocardium

Studies raise questions about impact of statins on flu vaccination in seniors
(Infectious Diseases Society of America) A new pair of studies suggests that statins, drugs widely used to reduce cholesterol, may have a detrimental effect on the immune response to influenza vaccine and the vaccine's effectiveness at preventing serious illness in older adults. Published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, the findings, if confirmed by additional research, may have implications for flu vaccine recommendations, guidelines for statin use around the time of vaccination, and future vaccine clinical trials in seniors.

Taking statins may prevent flu vaccine from working, studies show
The findings could have serious implications for public health campaigns in Britain, which have prioritised both flu vaccines and statin use in recent years - both of which target the elderly.
