Review of Baricitinib in the Treatment of Alopecia Areata
DISCUSSION: Baricitinib is the first FDA-approved treatment for AA. Other treatments for AA are used off-label with variable efficacy. Baricitinib is associated with black-box warnings due to adverse effects (AEs) associated with other Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors or use in other diseases. In the two large AA trials, AEs were considered mild or moderate; those reported more often with baricitinib than placebo included acne, elevations of low- and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and elevation of creatinine kinase. Baricitinib is a relatively tolerable and safe therapeutic alternative for severe AA, although additiona...

A Randomized Control Trial Comparing the Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma and 5% Topical Minoxidil for the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia
We report a 91.7% negative hair pull rate in the PRP treatment group which was significantly greater than the 69.4% negative hair pull rate in the minoxidil-treated group. Our study suggests that PRP therapy demonstrates a higher efficacy compared to minoxidil for treating AGA, especially in our patient demographic. These results have the opportunity to improve patient compliance and overall satisfaction while offering an improved option in patients unsatisfied with topical minoxidil.  Citation: Shah R, Asim M, Ouellette S, et al. Could red and near-infrared emitting fabric technology improve the severity of  psoriasis, polymorphous light eruption, and alopecia areata?
CONCLUSION: Use of a wellness apparel that emits red and NIR light may be associated with improved disease severity in patients with mild elbow psoriasis, PMLE, and limited AA. Limitations of this study include continuation on topical, intralesional, or systemic medications and small sample size.PMID:37674258 | DOI:10.1080/09546634.2023.2251619

Prenatal diagnosis of lanosterol synthase deficiency: Fetal ultrasound findings as a window on family genetics
Eur J Med Genet. 2023 Aug 31:104825. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmg.2023.104825. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCholesterol is essential in the brain from the earliest stages of embryonic development. Disruption of cholesterol synthesis pathways that leads to cholesterol deficiency underlies a few syndromes, including desmosterolosis and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome. In both syndromes, brain anomalies can occur. The LSS gene encodes lanosterol synthase (LSS), an important enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. Biallelic pathogenic variants in this gene cause alopecia-intellectual disability type 4 syndrome (APMR4, MIM 618840), ...
