Perceptions and management of psychosocial factors affecting type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese Americans
Abstract: Diabetes has become a global pandemic and Chinese Americans are at least 60% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than White Americans, despite having lower body weight, due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because of the increased risk, it is vitally important to address the issues of treatment adherence and diabetes self-management in the Chinese American population. Many factors affect an individual's ability to manage diabetes, including cultural beliefs, immigration experience, language abilities/health literacy, educational background, employment, and accessibility of healthcare serv...

Bayesian Analysis: A Practical Approach to Interpret Clinical Trials and Create Clinical Practice Guidelines Novel Statistical Methods
Bayesian analysis is firmly grounded in the science of probability and has been increasingly supplementing or replacing traditional approaches based on P values. In this review, we present gradually more complex examples, along with programming code and data sets, to show how Bayesian analysis takes evidence from randomized clinical trials to update what is already known about specific treatments in cardiovascular medicine. In the example of revascularization choices for diabetic patients who have multivessel coronary artery disease, we combine the results of the FREEDOM trial (Future Revascularization Evaluation in Patien...

Offspring birth weight and maternal fasting lipids in women screened for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
Conclusions: This study provides further evidence that maternal hypertriglyceridaemia is important in programming intrauterine fetal growth and raises questions about whether women should be screened selectively for dyslipidaemia before, during and after pregnancy.

Development and Validation of a Model to Predict Absolute Vascular Risk Reduction by Moderate-Intensity Statin Therapy in Individual Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Anglo Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial, Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, and Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study Original Articles
Conclusions— ARRs of major cardiovascular events by statin therapy can be accurately estimated for individual patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using a model based on routinely available patient characteristics. There is a wide distribution in ARR that may complement informed decision making. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00327418 (CARDS) and NCT00000542 (ALLHAT).

Comparison of pregnancy outcomes between women with gestational diabetes and overt diabetes first diagnosed in pregnancy: A retrospective multi-institutional study in Japan
We examined pregnant women who met the former criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus and received dietary intervention with self-monitoring of blood glucose with or without insulin. Overt diabetes in pregnancy was defined as ≥2 abnormal values on 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, fasting glucose ≥126mg/dl (7.0mmol/l) and 2-h postprandial glucose ≥200mg/dl (11.1mmol/l), or glycated hemoglobin levels ≥6.5% (48mmol/mol).Results: Data were collected on 1267 women with gestational diabetes and 348 with overt diabetes in pregnancy. Pregestational body mass index was higher (26.2±6.1 vs. 24.9±5.7kg, P

Walking for subjects with type 2 diabetes: A Systematic Review And Joint Amd/Sid/Sismes Evidence-Based Practical Guideline
Regular exercise is considered a cornerstone in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It improves glucose control and cardiovascular risk factors, contributes to weight loss, and also improves general well-being, likely playing a role in the prevention of chronic complications of diabetes. However, compliance to exercise recommendations is generally inadequate in subjects with T2DM. Walking is the most ancestral form of physical activity in humans, easily applicable in daily life. It may represent, in many patients, a first simple step towards lifestyle changes.

Stability and predictive utility, over 3 years, of the illness beliefs of individuals recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus
ConclusionsPeoples' beliefs about diabetes are formed quickly after diagnosis, and thereafter seem to be relatively stable over extended follow‐up. These early illness beliefs are predictive of later psychological distress, and emphasize the importance of initial context and provision of diabetes care in shaping participants' future well‐being.

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 12699: Comparison of Beliefs about Health in Migrants and Swedish-Born Persons with Type 2 Diabetes
Conclusions: The findings partly supported the hypothesis that dissimilarities in factors of importance for health exist between migrants and Swedish-born persons, and need to be assessed.

Association between non-adherence behaviors, patients' experience with healthcare and beliefs in medications: a survey of patients with different chronic conditions.
Conclusions: Patients' beliefs in medicines - a lower perception for the necessity of medication, and higher concerns in taking medication - and low patient self-management experience score were associated with non-adherence behavior. These are modifiable aspects that need to be addressed to increase medication adherence in chronic disease. PMID: 31580168 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Healthcare Providers' Knowledge of Diets and Dietary Advice.
CONCLUSIONS: Providers report recommending different diets depending on specific risk factors and generally believe that their recommendations are evidence based. Substantial gaps between their knowledge and the randomized trial evidence regarding diet for disease prevention remain. PMID: 26332479 [PubMed - in process]

Diabetes Cultural Beliefs and Traditional Medicine Use Among Health Center Patients in Oaxaca, Mexico
This study examined diabetes cultural beliefs and traditional medicine use among a sample of 158 adults with and without diabetes in Oaxaca, Mexico. Individuals with and without diabetes did not differ in their traditional culture beliefs regarding diabetes in this study. Younger age (OR = 1.04) and stronger beliefs in punitive and mystical retribution (OR = 5.42) regarding diabetes causality increased the likelihood of using traditional medicine (p < .05). Findings may aid in the development of culturally tailored programs to address diabetes prevention and management efforts in the region.

Does binge-eating matter for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients?
ConclusionsEating psychopathology is frequently observed in patients with T2DM. Among individuals with T2DM, co-morbid ED is associated with a poorer glycemic control in the presence of a higher BMI. The presence of an eating disordered behavior in patients with T2DM seems to have clinical relevance in the usual care of patients with diabetes. Therefore, we recommend eating psychopathology should be routinely assessed in T2DM patients.

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 7207: Exploring the Relationship of Health Beliefs and Self-Care Behaviors Related to Diabetic Foot Ulcers of Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusions: Living alone, shorter duration of diabetes, male gender, and lower health belief scores predict less adequate diabetic foot self-care behavior. Health care providers should assess these factors when designing individual care plans.

Multidisciplinary Residential Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Co-Occurring Eating Disorders.
We examined outcomes from multidisciplinary residential treatment for women with type 1 diabetes and eating disorders and the impact of treatment duration on outcomes. Participants were 29 women with type 1 diabetes and eating disorders receiving residential treatment. Repeated measures analyses of variance examined changes in blood glucose and psychological symptoms over treatment. Analyses were repeated to include treatment by duration interactions. Treatment produced significant reductions in blood glucose, eating disorder symptoms, and psychological concerns. Longer treatment duration was associated with greater improv...
