In order to explore perceptions of T2DM risk, barriers to weight loss, and views of diet strategies in women with previous GDM, a cross-s...

Perceptions and management of psychosocial factors affecting type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese Americans
Abstract: Diabetes has become a global pandemic and Chinese Americans are at least 60% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than White Americans, despite having lower body weight, due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because of the increased risk, it is vitally important to address the issues of treatment adherence and diabetes self-management in the Chinese American population. Many factors affect an individual's ability to manage diabetes, including cultural beliefs, immigration experience, language abilities/health literacy, educational background, employment, and accessibility of healthcare serv...

Bayesian Analysis: A Practical Approach to Interpret Clinical Trials and Create Clinical Practice Guidelines Novel Statistical Methods
Bayesian analysis is firmly grounded in the science of probability and has been increasingly supplementing or replacing traditional approaches based on P values. In this review, we present gradually more complex examples, along with programming code and data sets, to show how Bayesian analysis takes evidence from randomized clinical trials to update what is already known about specific treatments in cardiovascular medicine. In the example of revascularization choices for diabetic patients who have multivessel coronary artery disease, we combine the results of the FREEDOM trial (Future Revascularization Evaluation in Patien...

Offspring birth weight and maternal fasting lipids in women screened for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
Conclusions: This study provides further evidence that maternal hypertriglyceridaemia is important in programming intrauterine fetal growth and raises questions about whether women should be screened selectively for dyslipidaemia before, during and after pregnancy.

Development and Validation of a Model to Predict Absolute Vascular Risk Reduction by Moderate-Intensity Statin Therapy in Individual Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Anglo Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial, Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, and Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study Original Articles
Conclusions— ARRs of major cardiovascular events by statin therapy can be accurately estimated for individual patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using a model based on routinely available patient characteristics. There is a wide distribution in ARR that may complement informed decision making. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00327418 (CARDS) and NCT00000542 (ALLHAT).

Comparison of pregnancy outcomes between women with gestational diabetes and overt diabetes first diagnosed in pregnancy: A retrospective multi-institutional study in Japan
We examined pregnant women who met the former criteria for gestational diabetes mellitus and received dietary intervention with self-monitoring of blood glucose with or without insulin. Overt diabetes in pregnancy was defined as ≥2 abnormal values on 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, fasting glucose ≥126mg/dl (7.0mmol/l) and 2-h postprandial glucose ≥200mg/dl (11.1mmol/l), or glycated hemoglobin levels ≥6.5% (48mmol/mol).Results: Data were collected on 1267 women with gestational diabetes and 348 with overt diabetes in pregnancy. Pregestational body mass index was higher (26.2±6.1 vs. 24.9±5.7kg, P

Walking for subjects with type 2 diabetes: A Systematic Review And Joint Amd/Sid/Sismes Evidence-Based Practical Guideline
Regular exercise is considered a cornerstone in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It improves glucose control and cardiovascular risk factors, contributes to weight loss, and also improves general well-being, likely playing a role in the prevention of chronic complications of diabetes. However, compliance to exercise recommendations is generally inadequate in subjects with T2DM. Walking is the most ancestral form of physical activity in humans, easily applicable in daily life. It may represent, in many patients, a first simple step towards lifestyle changes.

Countless People Are Struggling With an Eating Disorder Doctors Can ’t Diagnose
At first, Melanie Murphy was just following doctor’s orders. Murphy, then 19, had gained weight during a period of depression, and her doctor told her she should lose some. She went from 180 to 125 pounds in 18 months—and even when she knew it was time to stop slimming down, she couldn’t shake the need to chase a goal. Without weight loss, she needed a new target. That became finding the “perfect” diet, one that was clean and pure and would keep her healthy for years to come. At least, that was how she thought about it then. These days, she uses a different descriptor: “orthorexia,&rdquo...

Assessing the Construct Validity of Healthful Eating Belief Scales Among Southeastern United States Office Workers
The theory-based measurement of healthful eating beliefs can inform interventions targeting dietary behavior. Blue and Marrero (2006) developed the Healthful Eating Belief Scales to measure Theory of Planned Behavior constructs of behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs, and control beliefs among adults at risk for diabetes. We used confirmatory factor analysis to assess the construct validity of Healthful Eating Belief Scales in a diverse sample of office workers in southeastern United States.

Reasons for the overly optimistic beliefs of parents of children with diabetes
ConclusionThe results suggest that it is usual and helpful for mothers of children with diabetes to hold overly optimistic views about their children's futures. Medical evidence appears to have little influence on mothers' beliefs about likely outcomes for their children.

Beliefs and Preferences for Medical Research Among African-Americans
Conclusion The findings of this study indicate that certain beliefs about medical research participation and preferred study methodologies reported by African-Americans did not differ by age, gender, or level of education. This information about African-American’s beliefs and preferences regarding medical research should lead to an awareness of potential gains in African-American participation through the development of culturally sensitive medical research studies and methodologies.
