Peer beliefs and smoking in adolescence: a longitudinal social network analysis.
CONCLUSION: The results from this study suggest that peer beliefs about smoking, in addition to peer cigarette use itself, are associated with adolescent smoking through several mechanisms. Because beliefs favorable to cigarette use are present before adolescents actually smoke, these results underscore the importance of implementing smoking prevention programs in early adolescence. ACS Releases Long-term Care Guideline for Survivors of Head and Neck Cancer
By Stacy Simon The American Cancer Society has released a new Head and Neck Survivorship Care Guideline to help survivors of head and neck cancer and their primary care providers better manage their long-term care. The guideline addresses cancers of the oral cavity, tongue, lip, pharynx (throat), and larynx (voice box). Recommendations in the guideline may also apply to cancers of the salivary glands, nasal and paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. But it does not address cancers of the brain, thyroid, or esophagus because they are very different in terms of symptoms and treatment. RESOURCES: Head and Neck Cancer Survivor...

High-Dose Benzodiazepine Users' Perceptions and Experiences of Anterograde Amnesia.
This study was a qualitative exploration of high-dose benzodiazepine users' experiences of anterograde amnesia symptoms and their beliefs about their behavior during the phases of memory impairment in a nonforensic setting. Users subjectively reported experiencing symptoms of anterograde amnesia, especially after combining short-acting benzodiazepines with alcohol, but only rarely when using slow-onset, long-acting compounds. They perceived their experiences as unpleasurable, unpredictable, and embarrassing. Their awareness developed with time, triggered by descriptions of disinhibited and erratic behavior by others. Users...

Teens Today Are Having Sex, Dating and Drinking Less Than They Used To
Contrary to popular belief, today’s kids are not growing up too fast. According to a new study published in the journal Child Development, they’re growing up slower than they used to. The researchers analyzed survey responses from 8.3 million adolescents, ages 13 to 19, from across the country over the last 40 years (1976 to 2016). They found that today’s youths, compared to those in previous decades, are less likely to engage in adult activities, including drinking alcohol, dating, having sex, going out without their parents, driving a car and working a job. Today, the researchers say, 18-year-olds act m...

Implementing alcohol use disorder pharmacotherapy in primary care settings: a qualitative analysis of provider-identified barriers and impact on implementation outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: CFIR constructs were useful for identifying pre-implementation barriers that informed refinements to the implementation intervention. The number and type of pre-implementation barriers identified did not demonstrate a clear relationship to the degree to which sites were able to improve AUD pharmacotherapy prescribing rate. Site-level implementation process factors such as leadership support and provider turn-over likely also interacted with pre-implementation barriers to drive implementation outcomes. Abstract A05: Does Dual Use of Cigarettes and Little Cigars/Cigarillos Increase the Risk for Nicotine Dependence Among Young Adults?
Conclusions. Results showed that dual use behavior is common and that there is differential risk of nicotine dependence by tobacco use subgroup type and by racial/ethnic and gender groups. Marijuana in LCCs may increase addiction to cigarettes for males, females, and Hispanics, but not for African Americans. These data are complex, but point to the need to develop tailored health messages for cigarette-only users and dual users.Citation Format: Pebbles Fagan, Pallav Pokhrel, Thaddeus Herzog, Mignonne Guy, Ian Pagano, Kymberle Sterling. College Student Dating Partner Drinking Profiles: Differences in Relationship Functioning and Relationship-Specific Alcohol Expectancies.
Conclusions/Importance: Findings indicate that there are several distinct classes of dating couples that differ in relationship problems and beliefs about alcohol's impact on their relationship. These findings may inform the development of more efficacious alcohol interventions tailored toward high-risk drinking dating couples. PMID: 27096223 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
