Promoting cell growth for bio-chemicals production via boosting the synthesis of L/D-alanine and D-alanyl-D-alanine in Bacillus licheniformis
AbstractMetabolic engineering is a substantial approach for escalating the production of biochemical products. Cell biomass is lowered by system constraints and toxication carried on by the aggregation of metabolites that serve as inhibitors of product synthesis. In order to increase the production of biochemical products, it is important to trace the relationship between alanine metabolism and biomass. According to our investigation, the appropriate concentration of additional L/D-alanine (0.1  g/L) raised the cell biomass (OD600) inBacillus licheniformis in contrast to the control strain. Remarkably, it was also determi...

Propranolol, but not naloxone, enhances spinal reflex bladder activity and reduces pudendal inhibition in cats
This study examined the role of β-adrenergic and opioid receptors in spinal reflex bladder activity and in the inhibition induced by pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS) or tibial nerve stimulation (TNS). Spinal reflex bladder contractions were induced by intravesical infusion of 0.25% acetic acid in α-chloralose-anesthetized cats after an acute spinal cord transection (SCT) at the thoracic T9/T10 level. PNS or TNS at 5 Hz was applied to inhibit these spinal reflex contractions at 2 and 4 times the threshold intensity (T) for inducing anal or toe twitch, respectively. During a cystrometrogram (CMG), PNS at 2T and 4T...

Development of Indole-3-acetic acid-producing Escherichia coli by Functional Expression of IpdC, AspC, and Iad1.
Abstract Biosynthesis of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) via the indole-3-pyruvic acid pathway involves three kinds of enzymes, aminotransferase encoded by aspC, indole-3-pyruvic acid decarboxylase encoded by ipdC, and indole-3-acetic acid dehydrogenase encoded by iad1. The ipdC from Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 13047, aspC from Escherichia coli, and iad1 from Ustilago maydis were cloned and expressed under control of tac and sod promoters in E. coli. According to SDS-PAGE and enzyme activity, IpdC and Iad1 were good expression under the control of Ptac, whereas, AspC was efficiently expressed by Psod originating from Cor...

Abstract C64: Use of HPV self-sampling to increase screening for cervical cancer in indigenous and rural communities in Guatemala
CONCLUSIONS: Self-collection HPV testing appears to be an acceptable form of cervical cancer screening in at least one, if not more, indigenous and rural communities in Guatemala. This study will help determine if HPV testing increases the rate at which women receive Pap/VIA screening after receiving their HPV test result. With increased screening for cervical cancer in these communities, the incidence and mortality rates of this disease could be greatly reduced.**Data collection will conclude in August and all results will be analyzed prior to this conference.Citation Format: Anna Gottschlich, Audrey Murchland, Kristin Be...

Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) positivity among female sex workers: a cross-sectional study highlighting one-year experiences in early detection of pre-cancerous and cancerous cervical lesions in Kampala, Uganda
Although cervical cancer is preventable, most women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) do not receive routine screening and few treatment options exist. Female Sex Workers (FSWs) are among the Ugandan female populati...

Contribution of opioid and metabotropic glutamate receptor mechanisms to inhibition of bladder overactivity by tibial nerve stimulation
The contribution of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) and opioid receptors to inhibition of bladder overactivity by tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) was investigated in cats under α-chloralose anesthesia using LY341495 (a group II mGluR antagonist) and naloxone (an opioid receptor antagonist). Slow infusion cystometry was used to measure the volume threshold (i.e., bladder capacity) for inducing a large bladder contraction. After measuring the bladder capacity during saline infusion, 0.25% acetic acid (AA) was infused to irritate the bladder, activate the nociceptive C-fiber bladder afferents, and induce bladder...

American Academy of Otolaryngology: head and neck surgery foundation clinical practice guideline on acute otitis externa 2014
This American guideline updates previous 2006 recommendations providing guidance for primary care and specialist clinicians for treating children of 2 years and older with acute otitis externa (AOE): a diffuse inflammation of the external ear canal±pinna and tympanic membrane.1 2 Key points: what should I be doing? Distinguish diffuse AOE from other causes of otalgia and otorrhoea, for example, dermatitis (inflammatory, contact, allergic), viral infections, furunculosis and referred pain from other sites Appropriately assess pain and treat with analgesia such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. There are no s...

Price Differences Between Otic and Ophthalmic Drops
Objective: Otic drops are one of the most frequently prescribed medications in otolaryngology. However, some forms of these drops can be very expensive, and ophthalmic formulations are sometimes used by practitioners to decrease the cost for their patients. The goal of this study is to determine the cost differential between otic and ophthalmic drops. Methods: Pharmacies in New York City, Chicago, and Portland were surveyed in the span of 6 weeks by telephone to evaluate the current prices of various otic and ophthalmic drops commonly prescribed by otolaryngologists. Results: A total of 83 pharmacies were...
