Risk of overdose and death following codeine prescription among immigrants
Background Immigrants may be at a higher risk of adverse drug reactions, in that poor language proficiency reduces individuals understanding of drug label instructions. Additionally, there are reports of severe or fatal toxicity due to CYP2D6 ultrarapid hepatic metabolism of codeine to morphine among some ethnic groups, especially those from Eastern Africa. Methods Between 2002 and 2012 we conducted a population-based cohort study among residents of Ontario, Canada. We used administrative health databases that linked immigrants and Canadian-born individuals to both prescription medication use and emergency department visi...

CYP2D6‐Inhibiting Drugs and the Increased Risk of Fall‐Related Injuries due to Newly Initiated Opioid Treatment – a Swedish, Register‐based Case Cross‐over Study
This study identified a total of 167,257 fall‐related injuries leading to hospitalization that occurred between 1 May 2006 and 31 December 2009 and linked information about dispensed drugs to them. Use of newly dispensed opioids in the 28 days before fall‐related injury with and without CYP2D6‐inhibiting drugs was compared with an earlier control period. For codeine, there was a two‐fold elevated risk with concomitant CYP2D6‐inhibiting drug use (OR, 1.76; 95% CI 1.40‐2.20) and a three‐fold risk increase without (OR, 3.17; 95% CI 2.88‐3.50). For tramadol, the risks were doubled when CYP2D6‐inhibiting drugs...

Indicated and Selective Preventive Interventions
Exposure to traumatic events places children at risk for developing distressing, significant emotional reactions such as posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). These reactions also affect long-term functional outcomes. Research on identified and potential risk factors for the development of significant, persistent PTSS is under way. Evidence for preventive interventions is in its infancy but progressing. Family-centered interventions comprising education about emotional reactions to traumatic events and focusing on communication between children and parents show promising results. Only morphine has shown sufficient evidence...

A Multifaceted Approach to Improve the Availability and Accessibility of Opioids for the Treatment of Cancer Pain in Serbia: Results from the International Pain Policy Fellowship (2006-2012) and Recommendations for Action
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Serbia and at least 14,000-16,000 patients experience moderate to severe cancer pain every year. Cancer pain relief has been impeded by inadequate availability of opioid analgesics and barriers to their accessibility. In 2006, a Serbian oncologist was selected as an International Pain Policy Fellow. The Fellow identified barriers to opioid availability in Serbia and implemented an action plan to address: 1) the unavailability of oral morphine, 2) attitudinal and knowledge barriers about opioids, and 3) barriers in the national opioid control policy, in collaboration with the g...

Chronic Pain – Stories Of Struggle And Hope: Part 9 – Addiction Misconceptions
BOSTON (CBS) – Many people who take painkillers say they’re being unfairly targeted in the current war on drugs. The opioid crisis has been grabbing headlines for months. Gov. Charlie Baker has declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency. Over 1,200 Massachusetts residents have died from opioid overdoses in 2014. Cindy Steinberg is the policy council chair of the Massachusetts pain initiative. “We know that 78 percent of people who are abusing these medications did not get them from a physician,” said Steinberg. “They’re getting them on the street, they’re getting diverted, they’re getting th...

Development and Validation of a Model to Predict Postdischarge Opioid Use After Cesarean Birth
CONCLUSION: A model with three predictors readily found in the EHR-inpatient opioid use, tobacco use, and depression or anxiety-accurately estimated postdischarge opioid use. This represents an opportunity for individualizing opioid prescriptions after cesarean birth.PMID:35576347 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000004759

The standardized Withania somnifera Dunal root extract alters basal and morphine-induced opioid receptor gene expression changes in neuroblastoma cells
Behavioral studies demonstrated that the administration of Withania somnifera Dunal roots extract (WSE), prolongs morphine-elicited analgesia and reduces the development of tolerance to the morphine ’s analgesic e...
