Psychological effects and outcome predictors of three bariatric surgery interventions: a 1-year follow-up study.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that all the three types of bariatric surgery significantly improved psychopathology and eating disordered behaviors. They also support the importance of a pre-treatment careful psychological assessment in order to supervise the post-surgical outcome. PMID: 24737175 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessment of depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and eating psychopathology after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: 1-year follow-up and comparison with healthy controls.
CONCLUSION: Depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and eating psychopathology showed an improving trend in patients after LSG. However, some aspects of eating psychopathology worsened despite an initial improvement. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III, prospective cohort and case-control study. Alcohol and Other Addictive Disorders Following Bariatric Surgery: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Possible Etiologies
Abstract Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective intervention for significant and sustained weight loss in obese individuals. While patients often realize numerous improvements in obesity‐related comorbidities and health‐related quality of life, a small minority of patients have less optimal outcomes following bariatric surgery. The literature on the emergence of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) following bariatric surgery has grown in the past several years and collectively provides convincing evidence that a significant minority of patients develop new‐onset AUDs following bariatric surgery. Rouxen‐Y gastri...

Uterus-sparing surgery and mesh implantation: new insights
We read with interest Dr. Barba and colleagues ’ article in the January 2021 issue of the journal [1]. We esteemed the authors for their interesting and complete review about obstetric outcomes of uterus-sparing surgery for prolapse. We would like to make a comment in light of our experience about a vaginal spontaneous delivery after laparosco pic lateral suspension with the technique described by Dubuisson [2]. A multiparous woman, diagnosed stage III pelvic prolapse according to POP-Q system, underwent laparoscopic uterine suspension to the fascia of the external oblique muscle using a tetanized polypropylene mesh.

Gynaecological laparoscopic surgery for benign conditions: do women care about incisions?
Conclusion: The majority of the women remembered fewer incisions than actually used. Most of the patients interviewed would, if possible, eliminate the umbilical incision. Therefore from the patient's perspective the skin scars after conventional laparoscopic surgery seem to be of limited importance and the alleged advantage of omission of additional incision using single site surgery remains debatable.

Comparison Between Percutaneous Transhepatic Rigid Cholangioscopic Lithotripsy and Conventional Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangioscopic Surgery for Hepatolithiasis Treatment
Conclusions: PTCSL was a satisfactory therapeutic option for hepatolithiasis treatment, with less operation time and a superior long-term therapeutic effect compared with conventional PTCS.

98: Do attending physicians and trainees agree about what happens in the operating room during robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy procedures?
The objective in this study was to determine agreement between attending and trainee surgeons on important aspects of what happened in the operating room during robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy (RALH) procedures, which are essential for teaching and assessment, e.g., case participation for accurate case logs, intraoperative skill assessment for performance evaluation and feedback.

Surgical Techniques and Differences in Postoperative Outcomes for Patients With Crohn’s Disease With Ileosigmoid Fistulas: A Single-Institution Experience, 2010–2016
CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic surgery for isolated ileosigmoid fistulas in Crohn’s disease is safe and does not result in a different length of stay or incidence of postoperative complications. Primary repair (rather than resection) of the sigmoid colon in these cases, when feasible, appears to be safe and is likely to be cost-effective given the reduced length of stay. Diagnosis and Management of Colonic Volvulus
Case Summary: An 88-year-old man with no significant medical history, and in a good state of health, presented to the emergency department with 4 days of obstipation, progressive abdominal pain, and bloating. Examination revealed abdominal distension and generalized tenderness without signs of peritonitis. Laboratory values, including lactate and complete blood count, were within normal limits. Computed tomography imaging of the abdomen and pelvis revealed radiological signs of sigmoid volvulus and no evidence of bowel perforation (Fig. 1). Flexible sigmoidoscopic examination revealed no evidence of mucosal ischemia an...

Orthotopic heart transplantation after left ventricular assist device implantation and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
Nearly 6 million patients in the United States suffer from congestive heart failure (HF). Simultaneously, 78 million Americans are obese. Pre-transplant body mass index (BMI)>30 kg/m2 or>140% ideal body weight are associated with poor outcomes after orthotopic heart transplant (OHTx). Obese patients with end-stage HF present a distinct challenge because exercise is not a reliable option and weight loss is not effective with dieting alone. Bariatric surgery is a potential avenue to OHTx for obese HF patients.

Laparoscopic gastric bypass during left ventricular assist device support and ventricular recovery
The prevalence of obesity and heart failure is increasing in the United States. Heart transplant is contraindicated in morbidly obese patients due to poor outcomes. Bariatric surgery may increasingly be considered for patients with heart failure to achieve transplant eligibility and improve cardiac function.

Recognition and Management of Urologic Injuries With Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Injuries to the urinary tract during laparoscopic hysterectomy are quite rare, but are among the most serious injuries that occur during gynecologic surgery. Injury rates among subtypes of laparoscopic hysterectomy have been found to be similar. The most effective way to avoid urinary tract injury is knowledge of urinary tract anatomy and careful and thoughtful dissection.
