Patient Beliefs Regarding Hysterectomy in Women Seeking Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Findings in a Predominantly Hispanic Population
ConclusionsThirty-one percent of the largely Hispanic women with lower income in this study would choose to preserve their uterus at the time of prolapse repair, a proportion lower than what was reported from previous studies performed in white women with higher income.

Death or Damnation: Surrogacy and Religious Beliefs.
Abstract MC is a 42-year-old female who was in a motor vehicle accident and suffered multiple contusions as well as a fracture of the left femur, pelvic ramus, and left orbit. Due to contusion of the brain, MC has been comatose for over a week and is on mechanical ventilation to protect her airway. There is no written declaration of surrogacy. During the admission, surgery to repair the left femoral fracture was performed and was complicated by severe blood loss. Currently, MC's hematocrit is 24% with a hemoglobin of 7.4. The trauma team asserts that a blood transfusion would be in MC's best interests. Since MC la...

The hamster wheel: a case study on embodied narrative identity and overcoming severe obesity
AbstractBased in narrative phenomenology, this article describes an example of how lived time, self and bodily engagement with the social world intertwine, and how our sense of self develops. We explore this through the life story of a woman who lost weight through surgery in the 1970  s and has fought against her own body, food and eating ever since. Our narrative analysis of interviews, reflective notes and email correspondence disentangled two storylines illuminating paradoxes within this long-term weight loss process.Thea ’s Medical Weight Narrative: From Severely Obese Child to Healthy Adult is her story in context...

Food allergy quality of life and living with food allergy
Purpose of review: Food allergy quality of life (QoL) has emerged as a key outcome to understand how food-allergic individuals and their families live with disease. Food allergy QoL has been measured since the early 2000's, but in the past 10–12 years, the advent of disease-specific indices has better defined the daily psychological burden of living with disease, which is distinct from measuring quality life in other chronic illnesses where affected patients suffer from more physical symptoms which may cause measurable shifts in disease status. Recent findings: Multiple recent studies from the United States, Europe, and...

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Latrine Management Approaches in Internally Displaced Persons Camps in Myanmar
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2022 May 16:tpmd210526. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.21-0526. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWater, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions provide dignity and prevent disease transmission. Sanitary facility provision (e.g., latrines) is a key WASH priority in all phases of humanitarian response. Currently, there are evidence gaps on field effectiveness of sanitation approaches, particularly in protracted crises. Thus, we conducted a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of sanitation approaches in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Myanmar. We conducted 36 focus group discussions, 65 household surv...

Secondary Closure of Small- to Medium-Size Palatal Defects After Ablative Surgery: Reappraisal of Reconstructive Techniques
Postoncologic reconstruction of the palate represents a major surgical challenge with respect to the thin intraoral and intranasal lining. Current reconstructive methods have ranged from obturative closure of the defect to microsurgical free tissue transfer. The final choice of treatment will be influenced by the size and location of the defect and surgeon experience. The goals of palate repair include optimizing palatal function for speech and eating, and avoiding dehiscence or postoperative fistulas.

A Case of Transient Global Amnesia: A Review and How It May Shed Further Insight into the Neurobiology of Delusions
Conclusion In closing, our patient’s episode of TGA combined with her emotional and perceptual response lends credence to the proposal of a “fear/paranoia” circuit in the genesis of paranoid delusions—a circuit incorporating amygdala, frontal, and parietal cortices. Here, neutral or irrelevant stimuli, thoughts, and percepts come to engender fear and anxiety, while dysfunction in frontoparietal circuitry engenders inappropriate social predictions and maladaptive inferences about the intentions of others.[54] Hippocampus relays information about contextual information based on past experiences and the current situat...

What We Misunderstand About Suicide Among Black Americans
It’s an idea that in one form or another has been repeated again and again. Cheslie Kryst had so much. She seemed so happy. She didn’t fit the mold of someone who dies by suicide. Kryst, an entertainment reporter, former lawyer, and Miss USA 2019, was a successful young Black woman in a country that often assumes suicide primarily affects white, visibly depressed middle-aged men, the Willy Lomans who populate American culture. So the shock that followed news of her death Sunday—which the New York medical examiner confirmed to be caused by suicide—was predictable. It also revealed a dangerous gap bet...
