The beliefs among patients with epilepsy in Saudi Arabia about the causes and treatment of epilepsy and other aspects.
CONCLUSION: In Saudi Arabia, religious and cultural beliefs about the causes and treatment of epilepsy exist alongside medical beliefs. The holding of religious beliefs, the practicing of religious rituals, and the presence of family support were found to be of great importance in coping with epilepsy, and their role needs to be fully appreciated in the medical management of the condition. A Cross‐Sectional Survey to Assess the Migraineur's Medication Decision‐Making Beliefs: Determining When a Migraine Is Triptan‐Worthy
ConclusionsResults build upon previously published studies and suggest that patient beliefs directly influence how migraineurs manage their migraines and have implications for patient outcomes. Such insights should be used to facilitate physician–patient communication and reinforce the need for patient‐centered care to improve patient outcomes.

Lack of association between generic brittleness and neuropsychiatric measures in patients with epilepsy
CONCLUSIONS: We hypothesized that being GB may relate to having a personality or mindset that predisposes patients to attributing poor outcomes to a formulation switch. However, findings here in patients with epilepsy did not uncover neuropsychiatric factors that predict which patients were GB and which were not GB.PMID:35151189 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2022.108587

Overlap between dissociation and other psychological characteristics in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.
Abstract Patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) often report symptoms of dissociation. However, it is unclear how these symptoms relate to psychotherapeutic treatment, for example, with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Here, we investigated the degree of overlap between symptoms of dissociation and other psychiatric features that are more traditional targets for CBT. We used a hierarchical linear regression to measure the variance associated with dissociative symptoms (as assessed by the Dissociative Experiences Scale - DES) among 46 individuals with PNESs. The regression predictor variables are...

Group-based cognitive behavioral therapy program for improving poor sleep quality and quality of life in people with epilepsy: A pilot study.
Abstract Sleep difficulties are commonly reported by patients with epilepsy and can have a detrimental impact on overall quality of life. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the efficacy of a psychotherapeutic approach, namely Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), in improving sleep quality in patients with epilepsy. Twenty outpatients with epilepsy who reported poor sleep quality were randomized to either a control or CBT-I treatment group, which involved four group-based CBT-I sessions, delivered on a weekly basis. In addition to completing a range of standardized measures related to sleep...

Stakeholder views of the practical and cultural barriers to epilepsy care in Uganda.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, there are four critical interventions that should be considered for improving epilepsy care in Uganda: the creation of dedicated epilepsy clinics, infrastructure strengthening to address medication stock-outs, community outreach programs for sensitization, and collaboration between biomedical providers and traditional healers. This article is part of the Special Issue "The Intersection of Culture, Resources, and Disease: Epilepsy Care in Uganda". PMID: 32758404 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Validation of the Swedish version of the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, based on people with epilepsy.
CONCLUSION: The Swedish BMQ exhibits psychometric features indicating its reliable use in adult PWE. Our results suggest that the BMQ provides information about the patients' view of their medication regardless of their general mood and that women hold stronger beliefs of concern beyond influence from their levels of depression and anxiety. Do Beliefs about the Pathogenetic Role of Amyloid Affect the Interpretation of Amyloid PET in the Clinic?
CONCLUSIONS: This work supports an unbiased interpretation of amyloid PET across different beliefs about the pathogenic role of amyloid, and a belief-independent reluctance to change diagnosis in cases where change is expected and recommended. PMID: 26618706 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Beliefs about hearing voices.
We examined 35 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who experienced AVHs. Patients completed a detailed structured interview about their AVHs, including beliefs about their cause. In response, 20 (57.1%) reported that their AVHs were self-generated, 9 (25.7%) were uncertain, and 6 (17.1%) reported that their AVHs were caused by external agents. Several analytical approaches revealed little or no evidence for associations between either AVH intensity or phenomenology and beliefs about the AVH's cause; the evidence instead favoured the absence of these associations. Beliefs about the cause of AVHs are thus...

We developed and validated a tool to assess beliefs and attitudes about epilepsy among people with epilepsy (PWE) in Kilifi, Kenya. The 50-item scale was developed through a literature review and qualitative study findings, and its reliability and validity were assessed with 673 PWE. A final scale of 34 items had Cronbach's alpha scores for the ...

Parent and caregiver knowledge, beliefs, and responses to convulsive seizures in children in Kingston, Jamaica - A hospital-based survey.
