Bayesian Analysis: A Practical Approach to Interpret Clinical Trials and Create Clinical Practice Guidelines Novel Statistical Methods
Bayesian analysis is firmly grounded in the science of probability and has been increasingly supplementing or replacing traditional approaches based on P values. In this review, we present gradually more complex examples, along with programming code and data sets, to show how Bayesian analysis takes evidence from randomized clinical trials to update what is already known about specific treatments in cardiovascular medicine. In the example of revascularization choices for diabetic patients who have multivessel coronary artery disease, we combine the results of the FREEDOM trial (Future Revascularization Evaluation in Patien...

Abstract 123: Attitudes and Availability of Palliative Care Within Institutions Providing Mechanical Circulatory Support Device Implantation: A National Survey Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusion: Although selection/respondent bias is an important limitation of these results, these respondents agreed with and reported enacting ISHLT and CMS recommendations for including PC in MCSD evaluation. Nevertheless, there was less consensus on clinicians’ roles and confidence levels with providing PC following MCSD implantation and at end-of-life versus during the pre-implantation period.Clinical Implications: Findings from this survey can enable cardiovascular clinicians to evaluate how PC involvement impacts care for patients with MCSD; however, metrics to evaluate patient and system outcomes are yet to be...

Abstract 126: Cardiac Stress Testing: Optimizing Outcomes Through Dual Physician-Patient Education Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that both knowledge/competence of cardiologists on evidence-based practices as well as the understanding of patient/caregivers on CV testing can be improved using a dual approach to education.

Abstract 168: Impact of Continuing Medical Education on the Treatment of Hypertriglyceridemia with Omega-3 Fatty Acids Session Title: Abstract Poster Session I and Reception
Conclusion: This study demonstrates the success of a targeted educational intervention with two educational components on improving knowledge, competence, and clinical decision-making of PCPs and cardiologists regarding hypertriglyceridemia treatment and the role of omega-3 fatty acid products in its treatment.

Development and Validation of a Model to Predict Absolute Vascular Risk Reduction by Moderate-Intensity Statin Therapy in Individual Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Anglo Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial, Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial, and Collaborative Atorvastatin Diabetes Study Original Articles
Conclusions— ARRs of major cardiovascular events by statin therapy can be accurately estimated for individual patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using a model based on routinely available patient characteristics. There is a wide distribution in ARR that may complement informed decision making. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00327418 (CARDS) and NCT00000542 (ALLHAT).

Impact of Female Sex on Clinical Outcomes in the FIRE AND ICE Trial of Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation Original Articles
Conclusions: After catheter ablation of paroxysmal AF, female sex was associated with an almost 40% increase in the risks of primary efficacy failure and cardiovascular rehospitalization. Primary efficacy failure was also adversely impacted by a history of direct current cardioversion, whereas hypertension had a negative impact on cardiovascular rehospitalization. History of AF was the only predictor of repeat ablation. Clinical Trial Registration: URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT01490814.

Abstract 228: Assessing Knowledge, Perceptions, and Cultural Attitudes Towards Stroke in Elderly Korean-Americans: The Strengthening Our Korean Elders Through Community-Partnered Education (STROKE-COPE) Project Poster Session II
Conclusions: Elderly Korean-Americans have substantial risk for stroke, but possess both language and belief barriers that may interfere with stroke prevention and response. A stroke education curriculum tailored for elderly Korean-Americans must address these culturally specific beliefs to be effective.

Development and Pilot Testing of a Tailored Text Messaging Intervention to Improve Self-efficacy and Health Beliefs About Self-care in People with Heart Failure
Self-efficacy and health beliefs are important modifiable factors influencing adherence to self-care behaviors in patients with heart failure (HF). Text messaging (TM) is a low-cost and scalable solution for delivering behavior change intervention and improving patient outcomes, yet it is largely unexplored in patients with HF.

Abstract 144: Perceived Risks and Safety of Transfusions Influence a Providers Inclination to Transfuse Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: A provider’s belief in the safety of transfusions and concern for the risk of anemia was significantly associated with a greater likelihood of blood utilization. Our findings suggest that future blood management interventions should address a provider’s beliefs concerning blood transfusions.

Cola and Honey: Exploring food riddles in rhythm disturbances
Drinking excessive amounts of cola and eating honey made from the pollen of Rhododendrons can cause unusual syncope (fainting) and symptoms of arrhythmia, report two case studies presented as abstracts.  “Both these studies underline the importance of clinicians taking detailed medical histories for patients with unexplained arrhythmias and including questions about their dietary intakes,” says Professor Andreas Goette, Scientific Programme Committee chairperson.  Read more Topics: Arrhythmias
