Hepatitis B Screening in Asian and Pacific Islanders: New Guidelines, Old Barriers
Abstract Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious liver disease that disproportionately affects Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants. In May 2014, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released new HBV screening guidelines that expanded screening to non-pregnant adolescents and adults who were born in Asia and the Pacific Islands, and U.S.-born persons not vaccinated as infants whose parents were born in Central or Southeast Asia. Although the guidelines empower health care providers and community health workers to expand their screening efforts, old barriers to screening remain deeply rooted in ...

Infections and cancer: debate about using vaccines as a cancer control tool
In 2012, Infectious Agents and Cancer commissioned a thematic series collection of articles on Prevention of HPV related cancer. The articles have attracted wide interest and stimulated debate, including about the utility of vaccines in cancer control. The application of vaccines to cancer control fulfills a promise envisioned at the turn of the 20th century when remarkable experiments showed that some cancers were caused by infections. This suggested the possibility of applying infection-control strategies to cancer control. Vaccines represent the most practical cost-effective technology to prevent wide human suffering an...

Reminding people about vaccinations can increase rates of immunization
Anupdated Cochrane Review, published in the Cochrane Library today, suggests that reminding people when their vaccinations are due or overdue increases the number of people being immunized.Rates of immunization against infectious diseases in children and adults are improving, but under-vaccination remains a problem that results in vaccine-preventable deaths and illnesses. In Europe, 11,316 cases of measles were reported during 2012, and an estimated four to 50 million symptomatic cases of flu occur each year.Reminders can be sent to patients, parents or guardians, or whole populations when vaccines are due, either because ...

Knowledge about Hepatitis B Virus and Relevant Safety Precautions among Dental Students in Kurdistan Region, Iraq
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of surveyed dental students are aware of HBV, its mode of transmission, infection, complications, vaccination, and safety precautions required to prevent the spreading of the virus. While the levels of knowledge about HBV and safety precautions among the dental students in the Kurdistan region of Iraq were generally acceptable, differences in knowledge level were identified between the universities, and these may be related to their educational and training programs.PMID:36172400 | PMC:PMC9510674 | DOI:10.1155/2022/8516944

Risk perception and knowledge of Hepatitis B infection among Cleaners in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions Hospital cleaners have poor risk perception, low level of awareness and poor knowledge about hepatitis B infection. Health workers might differ in what they know about hepatitis B infection and vaccine because of the differences in the levels of education, training, and perceived relevance within hospital settings.

Clinical Features and Transmission Pattern of Hepatitis A: An Experience from a Hepatitis A Outbreak Caused by Two Cocirculating Genotypes in Sri Lanka.
Abstract Sri Lanka is one of the intermediate-endemic areas for hepatitis A virus (HAV), and concerns exist about the increasing HAV-susceptible population. In fact, Sri Lanka recorded a large hepatitis outbreak, possibly hepatitis A, around the end of the Sri Lankan war. It included more than 14,000 patients consisting of local residents, internally displaced personnel, and military personnel in the main combat zone. The outbreak had slowed down by October 2009; however, acute viral hepatitis continued to occur sequentially among military personnel. We obtained clinical information and serum samples from 222 pati...

Abstract B69: Cervical and anal HPV serotype-specific prevalence among high-risk indigent women in substance abuse recovery
Conclusion: The HPV serotypes observed in this study provide baseline HPV prevalence rates for monitoring future HPV vaccination efforts in this and similar underserved populations. This is significant since one of the fastest growing segments of the criminal population are women offenders serving time on probation for low level offenses related to drug activity and prostitution. HPV vaccination programs in this target population may need to be broadened to include mid-adult women and other serotypes in addition to HPV 16/18.Citation Format: Martha J. Abstract C76: Community-wide outreach and screening to reduce hepatitis B, hepatitis C and liver cancer disparities among African immigrants in Minnesota
Conclusions: Chronic HBV and HCV are major health problems among recent African immigrants in Minnesota.
