What is your scientific background? I studied geology and zoology at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1980 with a BS in Geology. I went on to receive a MS in Paleontology in 1983 from the University of Wyoming studying fossil mammals of the Paleocene. How did you transition from the lab to your current job? Perspectives Malaria
In 1866 a newly qualified Aberdonian doctor, Patrick Manson, followed his older brother into the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service. After a decade in the service Manson retired to Scotland, but in the early 1890s he was forced back into practice by a currency crash that wiped out his Chinese pension. Drawing on his experiences in east Asia, he began to concentrate on the study of tropical diseases, developing an ecological approach in which bacteriology and pathology were combined with entomology and geography.

Bluetongue, Schmallenberg - what is next? Culicoides-borne viral diseases in the 21st Century
In the past decade, two pathogens transmitted by Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), bluetongue virus and Schmallenberg virus, have caused serious economic losses to the European livestock industry, most notably affecting sheep and cattle. These outbreaks of arboviral disease have highlighted large knowledge gaps on the biology and ecology of indigenous Culicoides species. Household cost of out-patient treatment of Buruli ulcer in Ghana: a case study of Obom in Ga South Municipality
Conclusion: Household cost burden of out-patient BU ulcer treatment was high. Household cost of BU is therefore essential in the design of its intervention. BU afflicted children experience social isolation.
