Emerging Technologies in Healthcare IT and Their Regulatory Considerations
Everybody loves to get and play with new toys. When we were children the toys were things like Barbies or Play-Doh. Now the toys we’re excited to get and play with are the emerging technologies in healthcare like AI or IoT devices. The big difference though is we can’t take these toys out and play with them with abandon like we did with the Play-Doh. While new and exciting, there are serious consequences to think about and regulations that need to be put in place and that will be put in place. To talk more about the regulatory considerations for implementing these emerging technologies, we reached out to our in...

Determinants of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women Aged 30-49 Years Old in Four African Countries: A Cross-Sectional Secondary Data Analysis
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of cervical cancer screening in Kenya, Cameroon, Nambia, and Zimbabwe was low as compared to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Age, residence, work status, smoking status, women's age at first birth, condom use, husbands having work, wealth status, and health insurance were the identified determinants of cervical cancer screening. Programme and policy interventions could address younger, rural residence women, poor wealth status women, women without work, and those who never use health insurance for the uptake of cervical cancer screening.PMID:37656980 | DOI:10.1177/10732748231195681

THCB 20th Birthday Classic:  As I’ve always suspected, Health Care = Communism + Frappuccinos
By MATTHEW HOLT Our 20th birthday continues with a few classics coming out. Back in 2005 I was really cutting a lyrical rug, and would never miss a chance to get that Cambridge training in Marxism into use. This essay about whether health care should be a public or private good has always been one of my favorites, even if I’m not sure Starbucks is still making Frappuccinos. And 18 years later the basic point of this essay remains true, even if many of you will not have a clue who Vioxx or Haliburton were or why they mattered back then! Those of you who think I’m an unreconstructed commie will correctly suspec...

Vertical Integration Doesn ’t Work in Healthcare:  Time to Move On
Conclusion Healthcare providers of all stripes must leave the industrial world behind. The value chains in health services are not physical, but rather comprised of human relationships, sustained by trust. Virtual care, the advent of AI in healthcare and consumer demand will require a flexible, 24/7 and care anywhere business model. Those who build the best modern clinical mousetrap will end up with a committed clinical staff and loyal patients. Healthcare isn’t about the building, or the brand, or scale. Surviving and thriving in the future will require engaged clinicians who foster trust on the part o...

France: Health System Review
Health Syst Transit. 2023 Jul;25(3):1-276.ABSTRACTThis review of the French health system analyses recent developments in health organisation and governance, financing, healthcare provision, recent reforms and health system performance. Overall health status continues to improve in France, although geographic and socioeconomic inequalities in life expectancy persist. The health system combines a social health insurance (SHI) model with an important role for tax-based revenues to finance healthcare. The health system provides universal coverage, with a broad benefits basket, but cost-sharing is required for all essential se...
