Learning curve of laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a risk-adjusted cumulative summation (RA-CUSUM) analysis of six general surgery residents
ConclusionsThe present study suggested that at most 25 procedures might be sufficient to acquire technical competency in LapC. The variability in the number of procedures needed to complete the LC, ranging between 7 and 25, could be due to the heterogeneous scenarios in which LapC was performed, and deserves to be investigated through a prospective study involving a larger number of GSRs and institutions.Graphical abstract

Primary ovarian leiomyoma: a rare ovarian tumour
AbstractAfter performing laparoscopic unilateral adnexectomy in a 53-year-old woman for a rapidly grown unilateral adnexal mass, pathologists reported a primary ovarian leiomyoma with no genuine ovarian tissue. This rare diagnosis is found in less than 100 reports after systematic literature review, a greater number of asymptomatic ovarian leiomyomas can be expected. Thorough preoperative diagnostic measures are essential as rare cases of malignancy have been described.

Arc-to-line frame registration method for ultrasound and photoacoustic image-guided intraoperative robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy
ConclusionThe proposed frame registration algorithm enabled a simple yet efficient integration of commercial US/PA imaging system into laparoscopic surgical setting by leveraging the characteristic properties of acoustic wave propagation and laser excitation, contributing to automated US/PA image-guided surgical intervention applications.

Opioid Prescribing Variation After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the US Military Health System
After laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), there is a wide variation in opioid prescription miligram morphine equivalent dose (MED) and refills across US medical institutions. Given wide variation and opioid prescription guidelines, it is essential to conduct thorough health services research across medical, surgical, and patient-level factors that can be implemented to improve system-wide prescribing practices. Therefore, this study describes discharge MED variation and opioid refill probability after emergent and nonemergent LC.

Nephrectomy and IVC thrombectomy in renal cancer: a narrative review
AbstractRenal cell carcinoma accounts for two to three percent of adult malignancies and can lead to inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis. This condition can decrease the rate of 5-year survival for patients to 60%. The treatment of choice in such cases is radical nephrectomy and inferior vena cava thrombectomy. This surgery is one of the most challenging due to many perioperative complications. There are many controversial methods reported in the literature. Achieving the free of tumor IVC wall and the possibility of thrombectomy in cases of level III and level IV IVC thrombosis are two essential matters previously advocat...

Esophagogastric varix caused by extrahepatic portal vein obstruction with essential thrombocythemia: A case report
J Nippon Med Sch. 2023 Aug 8. doi: 10.1272/jnms.JNMS.2024_91-601. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExtrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) is a very rare disease-causing portal hypertension. Myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) including essential thrombocythemia (ET) is reported as a risk factor for EHPVO due to underlying persistent thrombophilia.A Japanese woman in her 40s was referred to our hospital with a one-month history of gastric variceal bleeding due to EHPVO. Laboratory investigation demonstrated thrombocytosis despite portal hypertension. She had a mutation of clonal marker JAK2V617F with EHPVO, which prompted ...
