Case Report: Stereotactic body radiation treatment for immunotherapy escaped oligometastatic progression in cutaneous melanoma and merkel cell carcinoma
In this report, we describe two cases of one patient with metastatic melanoma and the other with metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) who were treated with ICI and later developed localized resistance due to oligometastatic progression. We further highlight our experience using stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as a salvage approach to treat the oligometastatic progression. In addition, we describe the temporal and dynamic relationship of circulating-tumor DNA (ctDNA) prior to, during and after SBRT, which highly suggested the diagnosis without obtaining a histological specimen. Our cases highlight a potential r...

Impact of Practical Online Lessons on Chinese Medical Students ’ Perception of Radiation Oncology
This study introduced an hour-long online Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) as a supplement to the basic curriculum for 8-year medical students at Peking Union Medical College and Tsinghua University in China. The students ’ personal opinions and comprehension of radiation oncology therapy were assessed through pre- and post-test questionnaires before and after the MOOC study. The results indicated that the percentage of students interested in radiotherapy increased, and their knowledge of radiotherapy significantly improved after the online MOOC study, suggesting that short-term MOOC study may stimulate students’ inte...

Virtual cone-beam computed tomography simulator with human phantom library and its application to the elemental material decomposition
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is essential in image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) for accurate patient setup and dose distribution [1]. Three-dimensional (3D) information obtained from CBCT ensures precise patient positioning and treatment quality [2]. Reconstructing the actual dose distribution and monitoring differences from the planned dose in target areas and organs-at-risk (OAR) can be achieved using treatment planning with CBCT and machine logfiles [3,4]. Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) relies on the replanning on CBCT to optimize dose distribution based on changes in patient weight, target size, and anatom...

Need for standardization in the use of structures in the intensity-modulated radiation therapy planning of head and neck cancers, a GORTEC study
Intensity-modulated modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is the standard modality for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancers.1 IMRT ensures a highly conformal irradiation of the tumor while limiting the dose to the numerous organs at risk (OAR) of this complex body region, with very steep dose gradients of up to 2-4 Gy/mm.2 In addition to OARs, clinical (CTV) and gross (GTV) target volumes, ring-shaped structures referred to as planning OAR volumes (PRV) and planning target volumes (PTV) have been defined by the International Commission on Radiation Units (ICRU) —forming an essential part of standard clinical practice today.

Patient specific quality assurance in SBRT: a systematic review of measurement-based methods
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Aug 25. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acf43a. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis topical review focuses on Patient-Specific Quality Assurance (PSQA) approaches to stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). SBRT requires stricter accuracy than standard radiation therapy due to the high dose per fraction and the limited number of fractions. The review considered various PSQA methods reported in 36 articles between 01/2010-07/2022 for SBRT treatment. In particular comparison among devices and devices designed for SBRT, sensitivity and resolution, verification methodology, gamma analysis were specifically conside...

Prophylactic Use of Mepitel ® Film to Prevent Radiation-Induced Moist Desquamation in Cancer Patients
Cureus. 2023 Jul 20;15(7):e42186. doi: 10.7759/cureus.42186. eCollection 2023 Jul.ABSTRACTCancer patients had limited treatment options for decades, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, alone or combined. However, there have been substantial improvements in recent years with the introduction of stem cell therapy, hormone therapy, anti-angiogenic treatments, immunotherapy, dendritic cell-based targeted therapy, ablation therapy, nanoparticles, natural antioxidants, radionics, chemodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, and ferroptosis-based therapy. Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, is a cancer treatment t...
