Bivalirudin or Unfractionated Heparin for Anticoagulation in Pediatric Patients on Continuous Flow Ventricular Assist Device Support: Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Use of bivalirudin for anticoagulation in patients on CF-VAD support was associated with lesser odds of hemorrhagic complications compared with use of UFH. Bivalirudin “washout” was successful in medical management of six of eight cases of possible pump thrombosis.

Hit Hard By COVID-19, Black Americans Share Their Grief
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as hospitals facilitated goodbyes over iPads and funeral homes buried dead without services, families were left with a uniquely isolating grief, devoid of the rituals that traditionally surround death. For Black Americans, who were 1.9 times more likely than white Americans to die of COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic, this stifled grief fits into a long history of unacknowledged pain. Dating back to slavery, when scientific journals claimed that Black people had higher pain tolerances, to now, as the maternal mortality rate for Black women is 2.9 times that of white women, Black A...

Early and midterm outcomes of transcatheter aortic-valve replacement with balloon-expandable versus self-expanding valves: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: PSM studies suggest lower early and midterm mortality in BEV than SEV, but the contribution of unmeasured confounders cannot be excluded. Results from adequately powered RCTs with long-term follow-up are critically needed to confirm these findings.PMID:35599108 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.04.011

Association of Echocardiographic Measures of Left Atrial Function and Size With Incident Dementia
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this exploratory analysis of a US community-based cohort, several echocardiographic measures of lower LA function were significantly associated with an increased risk of subsequent dementia. Measures of LA size were not significantly associated with dementia risk. These findings suggest that impaired LA function may be a risk factor associated with dementia.PMID:35315884 | DOI:10.1001/jama.2022.2518

' Chipping away ' at the iceberg of health disparities
'Chipping away' at the iceberg of health disparities Kelly Palmer joined the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health faculty in January, not long after earning her doctorate from the college. As a researcher studying diseases that disproportionately affect Black women, Palmer says her work is a team effort – and incredibly personal. Kyle Mittan Today University CommunicationsPalmer-web.jpg"Black women are my mother, my sister, my cousin, the members of my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha," said Kelly Palmer, an assistant professor in the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of P...

Electrophysiological ventricular substrate of stroke: a prospective cohort study in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study
Conclusions PVC burden (reflected by cardiac memory) is associated with ischaemic stroke. Transient cardiac memory (likely through TD-IBBB) precedes ICH.

Low Rate of Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Catheter ‐Related Complications: Long‐Term Study in Over 100 Adult Patients Associated With Reinforced Catheter
ConclusionsReported CRCs have been high for ITB pump systems. Ours is the first large cohort, long ‐term study of CRCs related to reinforced catheters; additionally, our low CRC rate compares favorably to previously published data. Thus, implantation of reinforced catheters may be associated with a low CRC rate.

Y-configuration double-stent-retriever thrombectomy for refractory thrombus in middle cerebral artery bifurcation: A case report
Rationale: Stent retriever mechanical thrombectomy is a recommended treatment for acute ischemic stroke. However, refractory thrombus in artery bifurcation can reduce the rate of successful revascularization. Patient concerns: A 72-year-old male, owing to the acute onset of almost complete right-sided hemiplegia and global aphasia, received bridging therapy. National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score was 16 at the time of admission. Diagnoses: Cerebral digital subtraction angiography revealed occlusion of the M1 segment of the left MCA. Interventions: Thrombectomy with 3 passes of the Solitai...

Periprocedural Predictors of New-Onset Conduction Abnormalities After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.
CONCLUSIONS: Computed tomography assessment of membranous septal anatomy and implantation depth predicted CAs after TAVR with new-generation valves. Future studies are required to identify whether adjustment of the implantation depth can reduce the risk of CAs and adverse clinical outcomes. PMID: 32879221 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Propensity-Matched Comparison of Evolut-R Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation With Surgery in Intermediate-Risk Patients (from the SURTAVI Trial)
The Surgical Replacement and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (SURTAVI) trial demonstrated the noninferiority of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using a self-expanding bioprosthesis to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for the primary end point of all-cause mortality or disabling stroke at 2 years in patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis at intermediate risk for surgery.1 The majority of TAVI patients in the SURTAVI trial (84%) received the first generation CoreValve bioprosthesis (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota).

What ’s the Big Deal about Data in Medtech?
Discussion, “Top 5 Things You Need to Know about the Implantable Internet of Things." Brian Chapman, partner and leader of ZS’s medtech practice of ZS, attributes today’s focus on data to the intersection of two important things: "A general recognition that understanding more and connecting actions with outcomes will provide feedback and understanding that will drive standards of care. This is not new, but as capabilities rise in data collection, aggregation, and synthesize rise, and coupled with machine learning, the promise of data in healthcare is becoming even more ...
